A seven-goal second quarter helped the La Cañada boys' varsity water polo team leap over nearby rival Crescenta Valley, 17-7, in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs at Burbank High on Tuesday. The Spartans, who improved to 24-7, will host Mira Costa in a semifinal match tomorrow (Friday) at 5 p.m. at the Pasadena City College pool. CV ends its season with a 21-9 record. La Cañada led only 3-0 after the first quarter, but went on a tear in the second quarter to lead 10-2 at the half.

Host Westlake Village Oaks Christian was no match for the La Cañada boys' and girls' swim teams in a nonleague meet on April 18. The boys' varsity and junior varsity teams won 21 of 22 events while the girls' varsity team won eight of 11 events. The boys' varsity beat the Lions, 128-60, to improve to 3-0 in the Rio Hondo League while the boys' junior varsity stopped Oaks Christian, 126-27. The girls team won, 100-69, to improve to 3-0 in league. Oaks Christian's timing system wasn't working well, so times were not available for all events.

The Spartan boys' swimming team swept last week's Marrow Invitational meet in Beverly Hills with seven first place finishes. Junior super swimmer Julian Lawrence placed first in the 500 yard freestyle. Senior Christian Lawrence won the 200 yard IM and senior Devin Borisoff placed first in the 50 free. The Spartan boys' three relay teams dominated all relay events. Senior Caleb Greig joined Borishoff and both Lawrences to win the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Chris Myers and junior Peter Chi competed with J. and C. Lawrence in the 400 yard free relay, also taking first.

In unofficial individual statistics released by La Cañada varsity water polo coach Larry Naeve, seniors Jordan Thompson and Gamal Rady scored the most goals this season for the CIF Southern Section Division III champion Spartans. Thompson and Ramal both scored 93 goals to top the La Cañada offense. Senior Doug McNeese was next with 79 goals. Junior Devon Borisoff followed with 55 goals. Sophomore Nathaniel Vail had 31 goals and sophomore Max Scott hit the net 24 times. Sophomore Mike Scott added 11 scores.

The La Cañada varsity water polo team, which continues to be ranked as the top team in Division III in CIF coaches' polls, and the junior varsity squad are rolling over almost every school they play. In Rio Hondo League action last Thursday, the varsity edged host South Pasadena, 7-6, while the JV stopped the Tigers, 8-2. In addition, the freshman/sophomore squad dropped South Pasadena, 14-1. Scoring for the varsity included two goals each by Max Scott, Caleb Greig and Devon Borisoff and one goal by Mike Scott.

Despite a two-week layoff, the La Cañada boys varsity and junior varsity water polo teams still thrashed host South Pasadena in Rio Hondo League action last Thursday. The boys' varsity topped the Tigers, 130-40, while the JV team bumped its South Pasadena counterparts, 120-49. The girls' varsity meet was a little closer, but the Spartans still won, 97-73. For the girls, Natasha Nguyen was a winner in four events. Individually, she captured the 200 freestyle (2:03.63)

Both La Cañada boys' varsity and junior varsity swim teams won their Rio Hondo League meets against visiting Temple City last Thursday to win the league championships with perfect 5-0 marks. The boys' varsity team thumped the Rams, 121-48, while the junior varsity squad knocked off Temple City, 127-43. The Spartans participated in the league preliminaries yesterday (Wednesday) at South Pasadena High, but no results were available at press time. La Cañada will compete in the league finals tomorrow (Friday)

La Cañada boys' swimming has acquired a reputation for excellence in the pool, and the Spartans performance at Tuesday's Southern Section Master's Meet lived up to that reputation. Eight swimmers participated in the meet, which brings the area's top athletes together to compete across all divisions. And after defending their CIF Southern Section Division II title last week, the boys were able to relax in their accomplishment and have some fun at the Master's competition. Junior Ian Mirasola scored with the team's best finish at fifth in the boys' 100 yard backstroke with a time of 52.64 seconds.
