Soap box racers will test the limits of their cars in the Annual Greater Los Angeles All-American Soap Box Derby races this Saturday at 10 a.m. on Michigan Hill. The VIP races will feature local officials, such as Mayor Laura Olhasso, La Cañadans of the Year Meredith and Tom Reynolds and La Cañada Community Center President-elect Joel Smith. ?Challenge races? will also be available for children, and final sign-ups and car inspections for that will be at St. Francis in the parking garage at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $45. ?

Youngsters between 8 and 17 who are interested in participating in the Eighth Annual Greater Los Angeles Soap Box Derby are urged to attend the final free car building clinics on May 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the rear of the La Cañada Sport Chalet on Foothill Blvd. Help in building the cars will be available from expert Kiwanian and California Family Soap Box Derby Association volunteers, who will also answer any questions. Car kits are available from Kiwanian Jack Dawson (818) 790-6592.

Join the community on Saturday, May 30, to observe civic leaders compete in the Soap Box Derby Races in La Cañada. Each year, as part of the Annual Greater Los Angeles All American Soap Box Derby, VIP races are scheduled. Participants are given engraved plaques suitable for display. This year there are three VIP races scheduled: Mayor Laura Olhasso will race La Cañadan of the Year Meredith Reynolds, La Cañada Community Center President-elect Joel Smith will race the other La Cañadan of the Year, Tom Reynolds.

One week off its usual pace the Greater Los Angeles Soap Box Derby will take place this Saturday, June 2, on the 'Michigan Hill' (along the easternmost portion of Foothill Boulevard) in La Cañada. The annual event was previously staged during the long Memorial Day weekend, but this year was moved to June to accommodate commencement exercises for the Class of 2007 at St. Francis High School, which is adjacent to the hill. The Derby will be staged from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's the only day of the year when drivers ?

The 2006 Tournament of Roses Queen, Camille Clark, will face off against Miss La Cañada Flintridge 2006, Lacy Hannah in the 7th Annual All-American Soap Box Derby on Saturday, May 27. These two lovely young ladies will don helmets and put their driving abilities to the test as they fly down Michigan Hill in La Cañada at close to 30 miles per hour. "I hear Queen Camille is a pretty good racer, but Lacy does have the home-street advantage," jokes Joel Smith, Kiwanian and Soap Box Derby event chair.

Members of the Noon Kiwanis Club of La Cañada teamed up on Oct. 16 to build another addition to the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge. Members of the club have been involved in providing labor for many projects in the past for the center. Led by Dr. Joel Smith, who is the past chairman of the center's board and past president of the Kiwanis Club, Kiwanians erected the new storage building. The new building is adjacent to a shed built by the Boy Scouts. Smith said that despite all the labors of love contributed by volunteers, the community center is inadequate for the needs of the public.
