The Mediterranean Room at Brookside Country Club was colorful with maroon and gold balloons as a huge crowd gathered for the 94th installation and awards dinner sponsored by La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and Community Association. The La Cañada High girls' varsity tennis team started the 2004 season with an impressive victory over visiting Hoover last Friday at the La Cañada Country Club. The Spartans dominated the Tornadoes in the season opener, winning 17 of 18 matches, to improve to 1-0. La Cañada will travel to Hart High for a non league match on Tuesday. "We are off to a great start," said Joe Thompson, who is beginning his 11th season as coach of the varsity squad. The convincing win was confirmation of Thompson's assertion that this year's group of girls is "stronger in both singles and doubles than last year's team."
