Before you blurt out a number that may make you cringe, keep in mind there is more than one way to measure a person's age. There is your chronological age, or the number of years that have gone by since you have been on the earth. Then there is your biological age, how old your body is in terms of cellular processes and critical life signs, and of course, there's your psychological age, or how old you feel you are. Your chronological age is fixed but the most unreliable of the three.

Before Susan Boyle sang on “Britain’s Got Talent,” Simon asked her, “How old are you, Susan?” “Forty-seven,” she chirped. Groans and murmuring were heard all throughout the audience. They were expecting a much higher number — she had the face and countenance of a woman 15 years her senior. The topography of our faces and the shape of our bodies represent to the world how “well” we really are. Susan had been the longtime caretaker of an ailing mother.

Back in the days of Sgt. Pepper, Lennon and McCartney had it right when they said, "You have to admit it's getting better all the time." If we all felt that way, we would never feel uncomfortable about telling our age. How did you feel the last time someone asked how old you are? Did you hesitate to let that all-important number roll off your tongue? Were you offended? Or did you look them in the eye, wearing a smile of satisfaction and calmly tell them your age? Let me take some pressure off you before this happens again.
