Real beauty emanates and connects from the inside to the outside in an authentic way. Too much emphasis on the ?outside? creates a self-centeredness or narcissism. To understand yourself and how you should dress to express your individuality is to help one feel more confident. This was the seventh year I struggled with bobby pins, pinning hair wreaths on Les Fleurettes provisional debutantes, who volunteered at the S.E.E.D.s (Supporting Education and Excellence at Descanso) fundraising gala in Descanso Garden. My daughter Gretchen pinned a wreath on her younger sister Amy at the first benefit. In subsequent years, one or both girls have helped with the wreaths. Last Saturday afternoon, Amy, now an registered nurse, was giving a newborn baby his first bath at UCLA Medical Center.

So (gasp, deep breath) here is my New Year's resolution: I'M GOING TO TELL MY KID THE TRUTH. I know, it's a freaky idea. That's my single resolution for 2005 and it's a biggie- I'm going to remove the rose-tinted spectacles and begin to prep my college-aged kid with what I know of the big, bad world waiting outside of La Cañada Flintridge- and the cozy college dorm.

Phillip Amador’s resume reads like a man on his way up. A successful tenure at the Allen Lund Company in La Cañada Flintridge has been punctuated by stints with the accounting, sales and customer service departments. The 36-year-old has been promoted four times, and maintains a strong rapport with colleagues. But seven years ago Amador had never had a job interview, much less worked in an office. And his credentials — gang member, drug trafficker, convicted felon — made him an unlikely candidate for a position at the national trucking brokerage firm.

The Associated Press last week published a story about David Ramsey of Brentwood, Tenn. Ramsey is touted as a “Christian money guru” who mixes faith and financial advice by arranging money classes through churches where he uses the Bible to support  his ideas of wise money spending. Critics feel that Ramsey’s financial advice does not belong in church, that “It was a way to make money instead of deliver a message.” What do you think about what Ramsey is doing?
