The Mediterranean Room at Brookside Country Club in Pasadena was the setting of the 93rd installation of officers and awards dinner. Also, the crowning of Miss La Cañada Flintridge took place at the event, held last Thursday night. Terry Walker, who is serving an unprecedented third term as president, opened the evening's proceedings. One of the first people introduced was Pat Anderson, executive director of the chamber. Assisting Anderson in the presentation of the evening were Wendy Gayner, event coordinator and member services and Stephanie Brashears, accountant and member services.

Ten Years Ago Jim Edwards, a former member of the La Cañada Flintridge City Council, was elected to the 51-member board of directors of the Metropolitan Water District. Edwards had served on the Foothill Municipal Water District board since 1993. Twenty Years Ago Ed Krause was named mayor of La Cañada Flintridge. At 87, he was reported to be the oldest mayor ever in the state of California and one of the oldest in the United States. Thirty Years Ago Ground-breaking ceremonies were held for the new $1.5 million Muller Chevrolet complex on Verdugo Boulevard in La Cañada Flintridge.

Ten Years Ago Six people filed candidacy papers to run in the March 1999 race for La Cañada Flintridge City Council. The candidates were vying for three seats, those of Jim Edwards, Joan Feehan and Deborah Orlik. Edwards and Orlik decided to seek reelection and they were joined in the race by Jack Orr, Jerry Martin, Warren Jacob and Anthony Portantino.   Twenty Years Ago Devastating Santa Ana winds ripped through La Cañada Flintridge, downing power lines and trees, causing several small fires and forcing the closure of schools and businesses.

The torrential rains of winter 2005 are continuing to impact La Cañada, as the city is moving to complete a landslide issue that could impact the local water supply. The council was reminded of the project at a recent meeting, visited by former mayor Jim Edwards and Foothill Water District general manager William Pecsi. The washout is on Highland Drive, and impacts a 30-inch water main that brings imported water to La Cañada and La Crescenta. Davis and Pecsi complained that other projects had been place ahead of Highland Drive, including repair of the Foothill wall, which has also been considerably delayed.

LCF Chamber holds its mixer tonight The February mixer of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce will be held from 5:30-8 o’clock tonight, Feb. 21, at Stephanie’s Art Gallery, 466 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge. Food and refreshments will be provided by Los Gringos Locos, Trader Joe’s and Stephanie’s Art Gallery. Cost to attend is $8 for LCF Chamber members and $12 for guests. FMWD to meet Monday afternoon The board of directors of the Foothill Municipal Water District will meet at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the FMWD office, 4536 Hampton Road, La Cañada Flintridge.

Dr. Armand Dorian prefers to work in the Emergency Room at Verdugo Hills Hospital because he likes living on full adrenaline. Millions of television viewers will have the opportunity to watch Dorian reenact four of his adrenaline-inducing emergency room cases on this season's episodes of "Untold Stories of the ER," which airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. on The Learning Channel. "They routinely e-mail ER physicians for story ideas, looking for new show material," Dorian said. "One night there was a really sad case, and I was really upset and frustrated afterwards so I sat down that night and wrote the story and sent it in."

Ten Years Ago New inductees to the La Cañada High School Athletic Hall of Fame in January 2004 were Jacki Tenerelli Asplund, Class of 1995; Sarah Ellis, Class of 1997; Matthew Moore, Class of 1998 and Brendan Naeve, Class of 1998. Twenty Years Ago It was announced no La Cañada Flintridge City Council election would be held in the spring of 1994 because no one other than incumbents Joan Feehan, Jim Edwards and Jack Hastings had filed to run. The election's cancellation saved the city $30,000.

In April of 2000, our daughter, Rachel Torres, asked the La Cañada Flintridge City Council to install three new plaques on the gazebo at Memorial Park. The first plaque would bear the names of the five La Cañadans who died in Vietnam. It would be followed by plaques for those who died in World War II and Korea. The project would be funded by voluntary donations at no cost to the taxpayers. Rachel was 16 years old. She called her proposal, Project Remembrance. When the Memorial Park gazebo was installed in 1990, the city installed a plaque with the city council members?

The governor's coattails may not have as much of an impact as Republicans leaders had hoped in districts like the 44th Assembly. A year after his election in the recall vote, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has endors-ed 11 Republican candidates, four of them against Democratic incumbents. One of the four is Lynn Gabriel, the Republican opposing two-term incumbent Carol Liu of La Cañada Flintridge. Gabriel has heralded the Schwarzenegger endorsement on her Web site and at numerous campaign appearances.
