La Cañada Flintridge Dec. 18-Jan. 2 Vandalism:  4130 block of Oakwood Ave., between 11 p.m. on Dec. 18 and 7 a.m. on Dec. 19. A 2001 Honda was smeared with animal feces. A similar incident occurred on Dec. 27, this time involving human feces. Owner washed the waste off vehicle. On the morning of Jan. 2, the same resident found shattered pumpkins on front yard. Nov. 27-Jan. 2 Grand Theft: 5200 block of Crown Ave. Between 3 p.m.  Nov. 27 and and 8 a.m. on Jan.2. Resident reported a black rifle, sterling silver necklace and a sterling silver ring with zircon stones missing from her home.

The work of entrepreneur and stylist Mark-Alan Harmon will be featured at Descanso Garden' semi-annual "Botanic Bling" this weekend. The event, organized by Descanso Gardens, is a trunk show of botanic-themed jewelry and accessories. This year's theme is "Holiday 2010: What to Give and What to Get. " Harmon, along with other vendors and promoters, will be showcasing designs for those who are interested in either purchasing a few items or learning how to coordinate accessories.

Dining With Duvall by Lynn Duvall My best friend, Judie, used to be a jewelry designer. She no longer makes her own jewelry. These days Judie haunts gem shows for unique artisan pieces and fine gemstones. A few months ago I was tagging along behind Judie as she combed the aisles of a gem show at the Pasadena Convention Center. We usually go to Santa Monica, where it's horribly crowded and steamy hot, inside giant white tents. For once, I was not crammed in with hordes of shoppers, dying of the heat.

Josephine Matosian met and married her husband Manuel in Baghdad. Both of their families had settled in Middle Eastern countries after escaping from Armenia during the Diaspora. When a Matosian daughter married an American service man, she helped the family settle here in the Foothills. Sossi Matosian Bagham, remembers their first home in Sparr Heights. Today all six Matosian siblings live and work locally. Josephine, the matriarch of the family, moved to Montrose, after the passing of her husband.

About $30,000 in damages and jewelry losses were experienced by a La Cañada Flintridge store during a burglary early Thursday morning, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. [Update 6:15 p.m.:  “The $30,000 figure released earlier was an estimated loss which included the damage caused by the suspects during the burglary. A vast majority of the initial loss is the damage and replacement costs.  The dollar amount for actual jewelry loss is unknown due to disarray of the display cases and the owner not knowing what was missing at the time of the report,” said Sgt. Robert Galbraith of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station.

La Cañada Flintridge May 12-14 Residential burglary: 5500 block of Vista Cañada Place, before 11:30 a.m. on May 14. Sterling silver flatware, bracelet and miscellaneous jewelry stolen from home. Losses were estimated to be $3,500 in household goods and $2,000 in jewelry items. May 14 Residential burglary: 300 block of Starlane Drive, between noon and 1 p.m. Jewelry worth $10,000, $6,000 in silver dollar coins and a .38 caliber revolver stolen from home.

Oct. 10 Forgery: 500 block of Foothill Boulevard, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. A woman discovered that a check for $120 that had been mailed to a caretaker never reached its intended recipient, but had been cashed in Culver City with the dates and names on it altered. Oct. 12 Attempted burglary: 600 block of Houseman Street, 10:30 a.m. A woman noticed that her window screen was falling off, and upon inspection, saw fingerprints on the windowsill, and that the flowers below had been stepped on. The window did not appear to have been opened, and nothing appeared to have been stolen from the home.

As spring descends upon La Cañada, so too does spring cleaning - giving the Mothers' Guild of St. Francis High School the perfect time to hold their annual yard sale last weekend. The two-day event was held in the school's gym. There was a wide variety of items available for purchase, everything from men's and women's clothing, jewelry, and accessories, to furniture, books, movies, and educational materials. About 100 area residents donated items for sale - including a Wurlitzer organ complete with a bench full of sheet music that drew the attention of bargain hunters.

Aug. 1 Computer crime: 5100 block of La Cañada Boulevard. A man called deputies at 8 a.m. to report an unauthorized digital transfer of funds from his bank account to another account. Aug. 1 Vehicle burglary: 1900 block of Verdugo Boulevard. A man reported the third-row seat of his Chevy Tahoe stolen after it was broken into while parked between 7:40 and 9:55 p.m. at the United Artists Theatre lot. Aug. 5 Residential burglary: 4300 block of Oak Drive.
