A laptop belonging to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge was allegedly stolen from a contract employee last summer, but the agency didn't realize it was missing until an inventory was conducted in January, officials said. JPL hired La Crescenta resident Jeffrey Mart in 1997 to complete contract work and he was given an Apple MacBook Pro laptop to monitor space flight operations from home, according to a report provided by the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station.

Ten Years Ago : Stan Kaull, Brian Hull, Tiffany Neumeier Bennett and Lindsay Parker were inducted into the La Cañada High School Athletic Department's Hall of Fame. Twenty Years Ago : Margaret Thatcher, the former prime minister of Great Britain, visited the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge where she was greeted by enthusiastic applause from JPL employees and trailed throughout her tour by media representatives. Joining her on the visit was her husband, Sir Denis Thatcher.

Opportunity, one of the two rovers still working on Mars, is beginning to climb out of the Victoria Crater after almost a year of exploration. The descent into the crater was described, at the time, by John Callas, Mars Exploration Rover project manager at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Ten Years Ago The Jet Propulsion Laboratory was selected by NASA to host the program office to coordinate efforts to detect, track and characterize asteroids and comets that could approach Earth. Twenty Years Ago The La Cañada Flintridge City Council was invited to view the new furniture at the La Cañada Public Library on Oakwood Avenue. The furnishings cost $5,000 and were purchased with money that came from the city, La Cañada Junior Women’s Club and Friends of the Library.

Ten Years Ago Two suspects who held up the La Cañada Sport Chalet during an armed robbery spree were arrested in Sunland by Los Angeles Police Department officers.   Twenty Years Ago A rash of commercial burglaries took place along Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada, with most of the crimes taking place during early-morning hours.   Thirty Years Ago The La Cañada Flintridge City Council joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the city of Pasadena in creating bike lanes along Oak Grove Drive north of Foothill Boulevard.

Nancy Schmuecker, a longtime La Crescenta resident, passed away peacefully at her home Oct. 22 from complications related to multiple sclerosis. In her younger years, Nancy was active in the La Cañada Cooperative Nursery School that her three children attended, and later was a leader in the Pasadena Wellesley College Club and Glendale Junior Philharmonic group that supports the Los Angeles Symphony. She was a history major at Wellesley and later received her master's degree in gerontology from University of Southern California.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is suspending the open house that had been scheduled for June 8 and 9, making the popular yearly gathering the latest casualty of the automatic federal budget cuts known as sequestration. The “difficult decision” to put off the event was reached Tuesday, JPL spokeswoman Veronica McGregor said in an e-mail to The Times.  “If we can hold it later in the year after the budgetary dust settles, we will,” she wrote. Last month, NASA issued an internal memo suspending “all education and public outreach activities … pending further review” because of sequestration.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has emerged from its "spring break" and is back to work, officials at Jet Propulsion Laboratory said this week. Up next on the agenda: Drilling the second target at Yellowknife Bay. The Mars Science Laboratory mission made big news shortly before its break, turning up key evidence of life-friendly environments in its first drill sample, said mission deputy project scientist Ashwin Vasavada. The revelation came just in time. Mars slipped behind the sun during the month of April, in a phenomenon known as solar conjunction.

Rescuers found four mountain bikers early on Sunday who became lost in an area of the Angeles National Forest above the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, authorities said. The men, all in their 20s, were found by Montrose Search and Rescue members around 1 a.m. on August 4 near the Paul Little Debris Basin in Arroyo Canyon, according to Sgt. Burton Brink of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station. No injuries were reported. They were riding on a trail that was closed after the 2009 Station fire, according to Brink.

Ten Years Ago Then-Vice President Dick Cheney, on a four-day campaign swing to the West, paid a visit to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada. Cheney toured the facility and met scientists and engineers working on the Mars rover program before delivering a short speech to JPL staff. His visit coincided with a television broadcast of then-President George Bush speaking at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., promising the U.S. would return to the moon and that there would be manned missions "to Mars and planets beyond.

La Cañada High School students Caitlyn Seo and Mena Hanna traveled to China last month to attend an international education conference. The students were joined by English teacher Ben Powers, Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist Benyang Tang and Lindi Dreibelbis, the school district's director of assessment. La Cañada High School was the only school in America to send representatives to the International Young Pioneers Round Table Conference on Education, which was held at Shenzhen Middle School.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada opened its campus this past weekend for an annual open house, drawing thousands of people, including students from as far away as Tijuana. The open house, dubbed “Worlds Beyond,” featured exhibits, various hands-on activities and a tour of JPL’s Deep Space Network facility, which tracks missions on Mars, Saturn, and the Voyager I and II spacecraft. There were also demonstrations of JPL’s Mars Science Laboratory, an SUV-sized rover scheduled for launch next year; and of the legendary Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity, whose lifespans exceeded NASA expectations.
