Norma Barnell Norma Lee Tye Barnell, 87, of Altadena died July 1, 2009 in her home. She was born Oct. 30, 1921 to George and Wilma Tye in Promise City, Iowa. Norma played basketball in high school, helping her team to the finals of the Iowa State championship. She was an avid golfer, bridge player, bowler, traveler and video poker player extraordinaire. She was very proud of her ability to play “Flight of the Bumblebee” on the clarinet. Upon leaving Iowa, she moved to California where she met John Barnell.

City, Sheriff?s Department modifies evacuation protocol La Cañada has implemented a modified evacuation and recovery policy that may be tested during a rainstorm expected to hit the foothills Friday. The city had received complaints from residents that recent evacuations, ordered because of the ongoing threat of debris flows, kept them from their homes longer than necessary. Impacted residents were also not permitted to return to retrieve clothing or personal possessions.

Robert A. Ketch, executive director of Five Acres and responsible for the child and family care agency's dynamic growth over the past three decades, will be honored for his long and dedicated service at the organization's "Swingin' on a Star" annual fundraising gala Sunday, June 3 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the One Colorado Courtyard in Old Pasadena. Ketch became executive director of Five Acres in 1984 after serving as its director of professional services for seven years, and has been at the forefront of expanding and diversifying the agency's efforts to strengthen families and prevent child abuse through treatment and education in community-based and residential programs.

Thomas Keens, MD elected to board La Cañada Flintridge resident Thomas G. Keens, M.D. , a pediatric pulmonologist at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and a professor of pediatrics, physiology and biophysics at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the American Board of Pediatrics at its annual meeting last month in Quebec City. Keens is currently finishing a six-year term on the American Board of Pediatrics sub-board for pediatric pulmonology, where he has served as chair for the past two years.

To understand how Catherine Banbury sought to enforce an $11,610.58 judgment against La Cañada real estate owned by Delos Arnold, a former Iowa state senator (“The mystery of Delos Arnold,” Around Town, June 20), we headed to the Los Angeles County Law Library in downtown Los Angeles. Our goal was to ask the reference librarian for the original appellate briefs in the 1891 California Supreme Court case of Banbury v. Arnold. Founded in 1891, the Los Angeles County Law Library has nearly one million books and documents.

Mary Mark Doane, longtime resident of La Canada, passed away this month at Verdugo Hills Hospital. The values and deeds of her life reflected both her Iowan roots as well as the changing world during the decades of her life in California. Mary Elizabeth Mark was born June 17, 1921 in Burlington, Iowa. Her parents, Walden B. Mark and Mary Rosina Held Mark, were descendants of German immigrant farmers who settled in Des Moines County. This region was the historic origin of Iowa, along the fertile west banks of the Mississippi.
