Girl Scout Kelly Arthur, 17, looked to her passion when deciding what volunteer project she’d like to explore for her Gold Award. Arthur is a member of Troop 2801 and she received the award, which is similar to becoming an Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts, in June. “It’s a culmination of all you’ve learned in Girl Scouts and you apply that to a project,” she said. The La Cañada High School senior has raised funds to purchase cleaning supplies and toys for the Glendale Humane Society since ninth grade as an officer of the Animal Aid Club, a campus organization, she said.

Dining With Duvall By Lynn Duvall Last month I enjoyed a meal in the Hoover High School cafeteria, catered by Acapulco. My table mates were strangers, though, like me, they were graduates of the high school. We'd gathered with nearly 100 other grads to work on plans for the upcoming 75th anniversary celebration on May 15. One gentleman talked effusively about the jazz ensemble at the school. His enthusiasm ran very high. Finally, when he stopped for a breath, I asked, "How do you know so much about them?"

Crestview Preparatory School kindergartners recently had an "Introduction to Matter" less by "Mrs. S.," a visiting educator from Science Adventures. Through experiments with solids, liquids and gases, the children learned about the different properties of matter and how they are important in everyday life. The students took home some experiments, colored candies in lab dishes. The visit by Science Adventures was made possible by The Crestview Association, the volunteer parent body which funds many enrichment programs for the school.

I attended the LCF "Flint fest" on Saturday Night at Lanterman Auditorium. This was the first film festival held by the La Cañada Youth Council and the Roger Bark-ley Teen Advisory Board. After watching the films I must admit I was impressed. This area, and especially La Cañada, is populated with a number of gifted film makers. The talent in this community is very impressive. I applaud the city for recognizing the need for such a venue and am truly impressed with the amount of energetic, creative and innovative work that was shown Saturday night.

The 2012 La Cañada High School Homecoming Court enjoyed a regal introduction at halftime of La Cañada's home football game Friday night against South Pasadena. The Homecoming celebration began with a 3 p.m. parade along Foothill Boulevard that featured floats created by each class. Cruising down the boulevard were a variety of trucks and cars converted into Halloween-appropriate floats such as the “Senior Skellingston” and “Ghostly Juniors.” The Class of 2013 was followed by the Spartan football team and cheerleading squads, each seated on trucks from county Fire Station 82 and escorted by sheriff's patrol cars.
