They?ve worked as a team for nearly a decade, but now as ?March Madness? hits the Los Angeles Library system, three familiar faces at the La Cañada Flintridge Public Library will be saying adieu to their home away from home. ?We?ve become an institution here,? said Sue Renyer, library manager. Renyer and two of her co-workers, Eric Goldberg, reference librarian, and Susan Hewitt, reference young adult librarian, will retire at the end of March after nearly 40 years of combined service to the Oakwood Avenue library.

Yana Ungermann-Marshall, author and longtime La Cañada Flintridge resident, held a signing recently at Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse for her latest book, ?Flintridge,? published a few weeks ago by Arcadia Publishing. ?I had been asked originally by Arcadia Publishing to do a book on La Cañada and Flintridge combined, but thought it would be better to do one on La Cañada first, as its history goes back farther,? said Ungermann-Marshall. ?At the time I was teaching local history of Glendale but was having a hard time finding information.

Descanso Gardens announced late last week that, pending final approvals from Los Angeles County, it will break ground this June for an environmentally-friendly art gallery designed to allow local, national and internationally recognized artists to exhibit their work in Descanso’s unique natural setting. Located adjacent to the historic Boddy House, the Sturt Haaga Gallery of Art at Descanso Gardens consists of a major rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of the current garage structure and the creation of additional exhibit space.

The La Cañada Flintridge Democratic Club will review pending legislation at its next couple of meetings. The next meeting is scheduled to take place from 3 to 5 p.m. April 23 at the home of Bill and Elaine Hurd, 4954 Alta Canyada Road. The guest speaker will be Irma Strantz of the League of Women Voters. She will speak on SB 480 (Kuehl): The California Health Insurance Reliability Act. The goal of the act is to provide fiscally sound, affordable health insurance coverage to all Californians, while providing every Californian the right to choose his or her own physician, and to control health cost inflation.
