Just in time for Father?s Day, father and daughter novelists Dan and Jane Pollock will sign their just released books at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Once Upon A Time bookstore, 2207 Honolulu Ave., Montrose. Dan?s fifth novel, ?The Running Boy? is a fast-paced crime thriller set in Los Angeles. The story uses flashbacks to trigger events in Moscow and Warsaw and it all takes place within a single day. Daughter Jane?s first book, ?Titus and Otis and the Arctic Adventure,? is a young adult book born from a winter trip to the Midwest.

A new commercial development at Foothill Boulevard and Chevy Chase Drive that will house the Flintridge Bookstore and Coffee House is expected to open for business shortly after the holidays, owners Peter and Lenora Wannier said this week. The La Cañada Flintridge City Council tentatively agreed Monday to absorb about 30% of costs, or roughly $30,000, of off-site improvements for the project, including landscaping elements and street lighting. "This project is really a masterful project for the city, in my opinion," Councilman Dave Spence said to Peter Wannier.

The funny thing about poetry is this: It is easier to get paid for a screenplay than for a poem. It is also easier to collect on a debt than to get paid for a poem. In 1994, the magic happened: Alan Fox, a successful businessman and Realtor, started a poetry journal. His journal, Rattle, has the following mission: “We love poetry and feel that it's something everyone can enjoy.” Since 1994, Rattle has published world-class poets such as Philip Levine, Jane Hirshfield and Sharon Olds.
