Whether they traveled fewer than 10 miles or more than 1,000 miles to witness the colorful magnificence that is Pasadena?s claim to fame, folks who attended the 119th annual Tournament of Roses Rose Parade got an experience to last a lifetime, or at least enough excitement to tide them over until next year?s float building and parade participation begins. Many of the thousands of parade watchers who lined the sides of Colorado Boulevard Tuesday morning came from states such as Texas, Utah, Colorado, New Jersey, Louisiana, and, of course Illinois.

He is 27 years old, stands fit and trim at 6'2'' and will return for a second tour of military duty in Iraq sometime this month. His name is Cpl. Michael T. Morton and he is a U.S. Marine. For me, the war in Iraq now has a face. I met Morton and members of his family last Saturday night during a surprise birthday party for his father, Marty Morton, who is director of Maintenance, Facilities and Operations for La Cañada Unified School District. The party in La Crescenta celebrated a dual purpose, as it was also a farewell send-off for Mike.

Nicholas John Penido and Holly Lynn Eiserman will be married in Mesa, Arizona on June 1, it was announced this week. Nick, a 2000 graduate of La Cañada High, is the son of Carol and Tony Penido of La Cañada Flintridge. He has a borther, Blake and a sister, Christina. The bride-to-be is from Chicago, Illinois and will graduate Northern Arizona University in May of this year with a degree in interior design. The couple met at NAU, from which Nick graduated in 2005. Holly's parents, Rick and Carol Eiserman, recently moved from Illinois to Prescott, Ariz.

Sept. 7, 1910-Oct. 7, 2004 Evelene Mae Hansen, 94, died peacefully Oct. 7, 2004, in Templeton. She was born Sep. 7, 1910 in Peoria, Illinois. Mrs. Hansen is survived by her children, Joann Fender of Templeton and Hap Hansen of Encinitas; sister Bessie Knapp of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; grandchildren Denese Bisbocci of Temecula, Terese Gilman of Simi Valley, and Joni Spannenberger of Canyon Country; also surviving are eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Her family wrote: "Evelene's joys in life were her family, traveling, horses, dogs and cooking.

The La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce has launched a new website and app containing a profile of the community, links to chamber members and other features. Called Village Profile, the site contains information about the city, links to a membership directory, advertising directory and a digital version of the directory the chamber publishes each year. The app for iPhone and Android smart phones contains similar material, as well as GPS-driven directions to member businesses and more.

Voters in the two local Congressional districts followed the state trend in supporting Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary, and John McCain in the Republican. In the 26th District that includes La Cañada Flintridge, represented by Republican David Dreier, Clinton received 54% of the Democratic vote, to 40% for Barack Obama. Sen. John Edwards, who just dropped out of the race, received 3.4%. Among Republicans, McCain received 44%, to 36.5% for Mitt Romney. Mike Huckabee received 10.5%.

Eunice Buan, who grew up in La Canada and is the daughter of La Canada residents Eryl and V. Thelma Buan, will tie the knot with Moreno Valley-born Sheldon Butler on Saturday, July 21. Eunice graduated from La Cañada High School in 1997, from UC Davis with a psychology degree in 2001, and from Samuel Merritt College with a master's degree in nursing in 2006. While working for her master's degree, she also earned her nursing license in 2005. She now works at the UC Davis Hospital system as a pediatric ICU nurse in Sacramento, California.

A pair of local athletes are preparing for the upcoming Amateur Softball Association national softball finals. La Crescenta's Madeline Velasquez and Megan Martin of La Cañada, along with their So Cal Fury teammates begin competition on July 30 in the 14-and-under travel ball division of Junior Olympic competition. Last year Fury captured the national crown at the 12-and-under level, gaining the team a berth at this year's 14U tournament. The teens depart for host city, Normal, Illinois, in hopes of reaching the championship game scheduled for August 5. Velasquez, the Fury centerfielder, plays for Village Christian High School in Sun Valley.

Gloria Lee Mini-Galleries present "Presenting Alan Mayer," the premier art exhibit of local resident and photographer Alan Mayer. While attending the University of Illinois, Mayer was the lead photographer for the Daily Illini. When he graduated, he accepted a business position in industry, but after only a year with that firm, feeling restless and needing to pursue his creative instincts, the brash young man went into business for himself. Mayer founded the Bratskellar/Josephinals restaurant chain, which eventually extended from Chicago to Los Angeles.
