Class was over and we were about to leave the Community Center when Lori Schnieder, a student of my mind and body fitness class, presented a large basket of beautiful, fresh picked plums. Hot and thirsty, we each bit into one as we walked to our cars, reminiscing about the tastes of summer. Grilled corn on the cob, tomato sandwiches, zucchini, a sun ripened watermelon, apricots ? we went on and on about our favorites. You know it?s summer when you?ve been refreshed with fresh organic delights of the season.

Set in San Rafael Hills in Pasadena, donors gathered at the home of John and Juli Miller to be recognized for their sponsorship of Hillsides' annual benefit, "A Marvelous Party," to be held on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. Giving thanks to supporters who donated $500 or more to the gala, the benefit sponsor recognition reception is an opportunity to "mix with many of our supporters we don't see on Hillsides' campus frequently, but that give to Hillsides," said...

Ever since the fire in the fish tank 12 minutes away from La Cañada at Cafe Eilat in Valley Village, I’ve been waking up too late. Too late to go to the morning service at Adat Ari El Synagogue (down the street from Cafe Eilat). Too late to go to the gym. Too late to get an Israeli breakfast (or at least Israeli coffee) at the cafe. I didn’t grow up eating Israeli food. I had never been to the Cafe Eilat until my friend Abe Sarna took me to breakfast at Cafe Eilat after the morning service at Adat Ari El Synagogue.

Members of the La Cañada Flintridge Islamic Congregation greeted each other and community members warmly on Friday evening at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge. According to the weather people on the various TV stations, we are headed for one of the coolest Julys in recent recorded history. Guess Mother Nature just knew some of us were loving that "June gloom" and just kept giving us extra servings. It was cool enough early Monday morning for me to dig out my fuzzy slippers because my feet were cold — who ever heard of that in July? So, for now I'm quite happy with our overcast mornings. . Even though we have been in the glooms in the a.m., by the time we reach the p.m. the day has warmed up sufficiently to give us balmy nights.

No more Shakshuka. There are mysteries in life. They never rebuilt the Cafe Eilat after the fire in the fish tank. My friend, Abe Sarna, introduced me to the Cafe Eilat after the early-morning service at Adat Ari El Synagogue. Cafe Eilat had just opened, with freshly painted wall murals, giant fish tanks, incredible baked goods and a big-screen TV tuned to the Israeli version of CNN. I didn't grow up eating Israeli food. Abe didn't grow up eating Israeli food, either.

A few weeks ago I dropped into Alexis, a tiny grocery store on the corner of Montrose and La Crescenta avenues, for a zoulbia. A teatime Persian dessert, zoulbia looks like a fat spider web. Tubes of yeast-leavened batter are swirled into hot oil, forming a round shape about four inches in diameter. After frying, the web is soaked in flavored sugar syrup. The result is a sticky golden beauty that makes your teeth ache. I adore zoulbia. So far I have not found anyone who makes zoulbia at home, so I don't know if it's delicate and breaks easily.
