Part 1   Sgt. Wolfgraham was the son of a preacher man. His daddy ministered a church somewhere in the hills of Alabama. As a boy he spent hours sitting in hot, stuffy, churches listening as his father went about the business of saving souls, singing “Amazing Grace.” He grew up a God-fearing man, and would someday answer the calling of the Lord. However, that would have to wait. He had another calling, and he answered it. He joined the Marines, became a warrior, a squad leader, a sergeant, dedicating his very being to fight the faithless in Vietnam.

In about two-weeks’ time, Christians from all over the world will be observing that funny little day called Ash Wednesday, which opens the season of Lent and no meat on Fridays. Lent is one of the most depressing seasons of the liturgical year, since it is a time when we prepare for the death of Christ so soon after celebrating the birth of Christ. Now, I call it a funny little day because it’s a day when people go around with ashes on their foreheads.

A new year is about to begin. A fresh start, a new shot. What a blessing. A new beginning brings hope and anticipation about what the future might hold. More money will be spent on fitness this month than in any other month this year. Gyms will be signing members up as fast as the ink can dry all around the country. Exercise bands, pilates balls and spandex work out gear will all fly off the shelves in the hopes that a "new you will magically appear. Recently I heard someone say, "I am not making any New Year's resolutions, I never keep them ?

Tradition The chilly Palm Sunday morning air does not keep the faithful at St. Bede the Venerable Parish from commemorating Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. As with most Palm Sunday services, they begin outside, symbolic of the people who gathered to meet and greet Jesus, who by this time had come to be known almost as a celebrity. Most have palm fronds in their hands, symbolic of the palms that adorned the streets of the ancient city as Jesus made his way past the people.
