John Palmer, son of Mike and Christy Palmer of La Cañada Flintridge, has married his college sweetheart, Kelley Cours, daughter of Randall and Dorothy Cours of Bastrop, Texas. The couple were married in an outdoor ceremony in Houston, Texas on April 8. Kelley was born and raised in Bastrop, a small town between Austin and Houston. She graduated from Bastrop High School in 2000. John moved to La Cañada with his family in 1986, attended the local schools and graduated from La Cañada High School in 1998.

Claire E. Serxner will wed Richard D. Walker, it was announced by her family this week. The couple plan a May 29 wedding in Houston, where they became engaged during a New Year’s Eve party. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Keith Serxner and Laura Mabie of La Cañada Flintridge; Richard is the son of Steven and Nancy Walker of Shreveport, La. Claire is a 2002 graduate of La Cañada High School who went on to graduate from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. She is employed by the American Cancer Society in Houston.

Joann Marie Naumann Baker of La Crescenta passed away Aug. 1 at the age of 78. Born in Miskawaka, Ind. on March 17, 1929, she moved with her family to Glendale in 1940. Graduating from Hoover High School, she continued her education, graduating from Woodbury College (now University) in Burbank in 1949 with a bachelor of science degree; Occidental College in 1955 with a bachelor of arts in English; and Syracuse University, N.Y. in 1957 with a master of arts in education. While continuing doctorate studies at Columbia University, she served as the assistant dean of students at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Va. Her leadership in the field of education was recognized by Who’s Who in American Education (1961-1968)

Two area Major League Baseball players began their respective seasons Monday. Two others will have to wait a bit longer. St. Francis High graduates Mark Loretta and Gregg Zaun participated for the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays, respectively. Loretta, a two-time All-Star, served as a reserve second baseman for the Houston Astros. He played the ninth and 10th innings of Houston's 4-2 home loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Loretta, who signed as a free agent after playing for the Boston Red Sox last season, ended the game by lining out to pitcher Salomón Torres.

More local high school and college athletes were selected last week in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. St. Francis High graduate Matt Hirsh, who pitches for the California Lutheran University team, was picked by the Houston Astros in the 30th round. The college junior, who was selected 914th overall, was 6-4 last season with an earned run average of 3.27. Brandon Higelin, a senior hurler with the California State University, Los Angeles team, was taken by the San Diego Padres in the 28th round.

Brook Speltz, a former La Cañada resident, 2005 La Cañada High School graduate and current student at The Julliard School in New York, was looking to get some exposure when he entered an instrumental music competition with the Houston Symphony. He got exposure, alright. He won first place in the national competition, which hosted its semifinal and final rounds at Rice University in Texas on June 2 and 4. From the very beginning of the competition, Speltz felt he was going to win the contest.

Ingrid Margolin Dr. Ingrid Cedargreen Margolin died on April 26. Her death was due to complications of dementia with Lewy bodies. She was 67. Prior to her illness, Margolin was a clinical psychologist and lived in Glendale, where she practiced as a psychologist and mental health provider since 1988, and where she lived and raised her family since 1961. Ingrid was born in Detroit to Irving “Sid” and Betty Cedargreen in 1942. She moved with her family to Wickenburg, Ariz.

One of La Cañada Flintridge's longest lasting commercial developments has changed hands. The shopping center on Foothill Boulevard at Ocean View Boulevard, dominated by a Big Lots! store, was sold by Paneno Brothers LLC on June 28th to GTR Realty LP of Houston. Nancy Cao, co-owner of GTR Realty LP with her daughter, Cong Wang, said that her commercial property management company has been operating in Houston for 10 years, but that she was ready to get out of the humidity and heat.

The Verdugo Hills Art Association will hold their first meeting of the new year on Friday, January 6 at 7:00 p.m. The location is the community room in the Citibank building, 2350 Honolulu Blvd. in Montrose. The meeting will feature a well known local artist, Angela Hernandez. Ms. Hernandez studied art at the Art Center School of Design and Chouinard's Art Institute. Her early art career included work as a graphic designer and fashion illustrator. Recently, Angela taught fashion illustration and model drawing at Otis School of Art and Design.
