If you’ve driven Interstate 5 just north of Redding, you no doubt have marveled at the beauty of Shasta Lake, with its miles and miles of scenic shoreline — all with the backdrop of Mt. Shasta, one of California’s most recognizable landmarks. And you’ve probably noticed the clusters of houseboats as you cross the bridge over Shasta Lake. We’ve driven that route many times, and each time crossing that bridge, we were reminded that someday we wanted to rent a houseboat on Shasta.

If you’re looking to “strike gold” in your next vacation experience, you might consider a houseboat getaway in California’s Gold Country. New Melones Lake just happens to be situated in a scenic part of the state that is almost like a giant theme park focused on some of California’s most interesting tourist attractions. Even if you just want to enjoy the peace and relative solitude of the 12,500-acre lake, New Melones will not disappoint. The fifth largest reservoir in California, it has plenty of coves, beaches, trails and scenery to keep you enthralled for the length of your vacation.

It's almost like you want to run up to the front of the boat, position your arms like wings and yell out something like "I'm the king of the?

You’ve got kids — lots of kids — and you’re wondering how you’re going to fit them into that resort condo unit. You also wonder how you’re going to keep them all happy and, maybe most important, how you’re going to be able to get away from them. Even the most devoted parent, now and then, needs to decompress. The answer: a really big houseboat. Being confined to a boat might not immediately top your list of good things to do with large numbers of kids.

First-time California visitors traveling along the freeway sometimes are taken aback when, just about the time they reach Stockton, they see a big ocean-going freighter that seems a little like a whale swimming in your local river. After driving hundreds of miles through California’s hot, dry interior, it just doesn’t compute that there should be a ship anywhere even close. Yet ships do call on Stockton, and have for decades, as they make their way to the state’s interior through an intricate set of waterways sometimes called the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta or the Sacramento Delta, or just the California Delta.
