While millions have spent the past couple of weeks mourning Michael Jackson, a few hundred locals turned out last Sunday to honor another late pop sensation. Steve Roth, an Elvis Presley impersonator, performed at Music in the Park to cap off the July 4 weekend. Roth, dressed in a powder blue and bedazzled polyester jumpsuit, performed many hits from Presley’s impressive and lengthy songbook, including “Viva Las Vegas” and “Devil in Disguise.” When he returned after a quick break, Roth was dressed in a red, white and blue outfit, complete with Elvis’ signature sunglasses, to perform some later hits.

The King of Rock 'n' Roll may be making an appearance this summer during the Music-in-the-Park concert series. Elvis won't actually be in the house, having long since gone to that big musical jam session in the sky, but the city will be contacting an impersonator to join the entertainment lineup. The parks and commission hopes to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Presley's first big hit. "Hound Dog" was actually released in 1956, and was Presley's first Number One. The commission approved for the fourth year a cosponsorship agreement with the La Cañada Valley Sun for the concert series, which will begin Memorial Day, May 28. Later dates are the Sunday evenings of June 3, June 10, June 17, June 24, July 1, July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29, Aug. 5, Aug. 12, Aug. 19 and Aug. 26. There will be two Movies-in-the-Park programs, though the commissioners caution that a movie not be shown with the final concert, before the start of school.

Jeffrey Polk, director of the new Pasadena Playhouse production of “Smokey Joe's Café: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller,” knows why the show has been successful since it bowed in 1994. “The strength,” he declares, “is in the music itself. Those songs are part of the fabric of America. I grew up in San Bernardino and when my mother had the radio on, I'd hear their songs. That's why I love this show: It's like watching what we used to hear on the radio.” Songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller crafted a body of work that resulted in some of the best and most notable tunes for Elvis Presley (“Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock”)
