Q. I want to stay in my house as long as possible. What do I need to plan for? Aging in place has grown increasingly popular throughout the country. According to an AARP survey, an overwhelming number of people say they would prefer to live out their days in their own homes. It is understandable that so many people would choose to age comfortably in familiar surroundings rather than relocate to a nursing home or assisted living facility. However, many matters must be considered in order for a person to successfully finance anticipated longevity.

Taking your newborn child home for the first time can be a nerve-racking experience, especially for first-time parents, and now Verdugo Hills Hospital offers a new service to help make the transition from hospital to home easier. Called Mommy Care, it is a partnership between the hospital's HomeCare and Care At Home programs, and offers new moms and dads peace of mind when leaving the security of a hospital environment to face the first few days alone with their new baby.

La Cañada Flintridge Aug. 5 Grand theft: 500 block of Foothill Boulevard, 8 a.m. An undetermined amount of money was transferred online from two Caltech Employees Federal Credit Union accounts to other bank accounts. The credit union reported the incident this month. Sept. 18-19 Grand theft: 1200 block of Flintridge Avenue, before 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 19. A bag, wallet, undetermined amount of cash, credit cards and a driver's license were stolen from an unlocked vehicle.

The Verdugo Hills Hospital Fitness Team is training for the "Marathon Des Deux Rives," set to take place in Quebec, Canada on Aug. 27 — all in an effort to raise money for hospital services and programs. Each of the 16 fitness team members has a goal to raise, at least $2,900 individually, and as a group they hope to raise at least $50,000. The team is asking the community to help support its efforts by sponsoring one or more runners through an online donation at www.vhhospital.
