La Cañada High's girls' basketball team has been at or atop the CIF Southern Section Division 3-A rankings all season, and that will continue going into the postseason. Though it was a little lower than previous years, the Spartans earned the No. 4 seed in the CIF Southern Section playoffs on Sunday, only to have that changed Tuesday. The Spartans (21-5) were bumped up to No. 3, flipping positions with South Pasadena, who forfeited a league game and its half of the Rio Hondo League title to the Spartans, now the league's outright champion.

This past weekend I had the privilege of visiting my godparents in the lovely, snow-covered hillsides of Elberta Village in northwest Michigan, on the shores of Lake Michigan. On my way home on Tuesday, I could not help but wince at the Los Angeles weather radar being shown on Chicago O’Hare International Airport’s many flight status monitors. It was at that point that I realized how much I would prefer staying in the great north country a little longer. (Beautiful weather you Southern Californians are having, I thought, until I realized I live there!

The news this week of the passing of South Pasadena High School senior Aydin Salek has made shock waves, from the scene of the incident to La Cañada, and beyond. Reports indicate that Salek was attending an unsupervised party where he was offered alcohol. This is not unlike an incident in 1993 where a Crescenta Valley High School senior was murdered at an unsupervised post-prom party. Who do you believe is at fault here? The parents? The students? Or both? What steps would you suggest to parents in order to deter this behavior?

The sixth-seeded Rebels drew a predicted first-round home game when playoff pairings were released on Sunday by the CIF offices, as they?ll host St. Matthias, the No. 3 team out of the Santa Cruz League, on Thursday at 7 p.m. Crescenta Valley was also a No. 6 seed with a home game, drawing familiar foe Valencia.
