I think summer has finally made it to our fair valley. It has been quite hot enough for me. How about you? On Tuesday my neighborhood lost its power for about an hour. Of course I was working on my computer at the time. Suddenly, everything shut down. The monitor went blank and there was complete silence - no whirring of the machine, no voices telling me that I had mail. Even worse, the air conditioning stopped. I hope this isn't a preview of what we can expect from our power company when it gets hotter in days to come, as it surely will.

You can have your dewy meadows, your warm weather, your picnics in the park, your evenings at the Hollywood Bowl. Spring really only means one thing. Grass fields, dirt mounds, white chalk lines, spiked shoes, home runs, double plays and nine guys playing as one. That?s right, baseball is back and the 2008 La Cañada Junior Baseball Softball Association season begins with the opening ceremonies this Sunday at La Cañada High School. And with it comes the slogan of the faithful, so commonly associated with spring itself: hope springs eternal.

Back in January of this year I had the honor of interviewing Esa-Pekka Salonen for the Valley Sun. My intention at that time was to make what the Philharmonic does at Disney Hall and at the Hollywood Bowl less of a mystery and a little more accessible to us, the readers of the Valley Sun. I truly believe that "knowledge is power" (Ipsa Scientia Potestas Est), Sir Francis Bacon (1597). Esa-Pekka Salonen is one of the most famous and sought after conductors in the world. There has been a lot of worldwide attention focused on Salonen and his successor as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudemel.
