Others have written about Hannah's talents as a designer, innovator and entrepreneur. (See “ From seed to full bloom ,” by Megan O'Neil, Valley Sun, Nov. 12, 2009.) In October 1959, Edward Eiji Tomita and his wife, Hannah, opened Eiji's Flowers on Foothill Boulevard directly across from where McDonald's is today in La Cañada Flintridge. Eiji, who as a child had cultivated flowers with his father, functioned as the buyer and traveled to the Los Angeles Flower Market multiple times a week. Hannah, who had no florist experience, taught herself floral design and also managed sales. Together, they built one of the longest-running businesses in the city, providing flowers for thousands of weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries and funerals.
