This past weekend I decided to take some R and R with my major criteria being both wonderfully relaxing and exceptionally beautiful. My getaway was to Yosemite and the historic Ahwahnee Hotel, a place where for some, the cares of the world could be temporarily carried away by the wind that sings through the giant pines and soars over the crest of Half Dome. This granite mountain, one of Yosemite’s most familiar landmarks, was perfectly framed by the picture-window in my well-appointed room.

Kevin Corrigan, senior patrol leader of Boy Scout Troop 319 in La Crescenta, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. A sophomore and honor roll student at St. Francis High School in La Cañada Flintridge, Corrigan is scheduled to be presented with Scouting's highest award at a May 22 Court of Honor. Corrigan, 16, hiked nearly 400 miles and camped more than 100 nights during his Scouting career. With Troop 319, he has backpacked through the High Sierras, climbed 14,495-foot Mt. Whitney, and reached the summit of Half Dome twice.

During the Court Kenneth Sugimura, John Choi and Brett Shaw were awarded the highest rank in scouting, Eagle Scout. John Gimin Choi John Gimin Choi was born on March 19, 1988 in Los Angeles. He started his scouting career as a Cub Scout in Pack 515, at Palm Crest. He enjoyed the outings that he went on, and decided to join Troop 509. Choi served the troop as a patrol leader, board of review leader, and as an instructor. He also served as an Instructor at Oak Badge when he returned as staff.

Nine high school graduating seniors, all residents of La Cañada Flintridge, have been awarded scholarships by the La Cañada Thursday Club, it was announced this week by Judith Cooper, club president. The scholarship recipients were recently honored at a tea held at the club. Scholarships were awarded to Amanda Borland, Divya Goel, Sarena Lu, Nicholas Lupica, Brandon Nahigian, Megan Nathan, Janice Park, Melissa Pittson and Mary Young. Amanda Borland is the daughter of Brad and Maureen Borland and is a student at La Cañada High School.
