Despite the present recession and future economic concerns this year, we all still have a lot to be thankful for. The fires have died, hope is on the horizon, and we have nowhere to go but up. And now as Christmas draws nearer, we can be thankful for the awesome gift ideas available this season to make even the trickiest person to buy for on your list a snap. Gadgets. Another year. Another memory. The facts speak for themselves. On July 30, 1945, two months before the end of World War II, the United States Army War Department released a list of awards. The list included the name of a La Cañadan. The young man’s name was Dan Shuler. He lived on Lasheart Drive. He was awarded the Silver Star. The Silver Star is the third highest medal that can be awarded to a soldier. It was awarded to 2d Lt. Daniel Shuler for “gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States.

Performance is Thursday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m.Veteran guitarist John Danley of Nashville is releasing his 7th CD "Durable Americana" on the West Coast. Dubbed "Best Guitar Hero" by the Nashville Scene and described as having "a vision of music that is startling and brilliant" by the Nashville Rage, Danley plays an original blend of jazz, blues, flamenco and emotionally loaded ballads. He occasionally employs the use of a paintbrush to coax intricate rhythms and unusual intonations from his guitar.

?Cirque du Soleil? was the theme of La Cañada High School?s Monte Carlo dance. The themed dance and card events took place Jan 12, preceded on Friday by a Monte Carlo assembly. As attendees entered the dance they received poker chips which they used to bet in various card games. The dealers were teachers from the high school . The school?s large north gym was the site of the event, with a dance floor in the center and card games at tables encircling it, providing the students with a chance to bet their poker chips for prizes like Clippers?

Ruth Deborah Barber Ruth Deborah Barber is the daughter of Doctors Donald and Barbara Barber, and the granddaughter of Mary Barber and the late Dr. Donald Barber, and the late Zoltan and Eva Batyka. She is a senior at La Cañada High School. Ruth is a National Merit Semi-Finalist and a member of the National Honor Society and the California Scholastic Federation. She has been involved in her school band and choral programs for the past four years. She is currently co-president of the band and section leader of the pit. Ruth is alto section leader for the Chamber Singers, president of the film club, and has participated in the mock trial team for three years.
