Just a week ago we were sloshing through a downpour of rain. This weekend it was like spring with warm days and beautiful blue skies. With the sun shining so brightly, plant surprises are popping up in the most unexpected places. Smack-dab in the middle of my front lawn I spotted a small purple flower. When I went to investigate I discovered a clump of wood violets with fragrant flowers that somehow had just blown in and taken root. My, the sweet aroma of those tiny blooms took me back to my childhood.

Every year the members of the Flintridge La Cañada Guild for the Huntington Memorial Hospital enjoy a holiday luncheon thrown for them by the benefactor of their year-long efforts. This year, while having a ball, they presented the hospital with a pile of new, unwrapped toys for small children who need treatment in the emergency department. They chatted, told Christmas shopping horror stories, and visited with the doctors who come to them every year with a wish list of equipment needed to continue performing those daily miracles that result in so many lives saved and miseries eased.

The two-day event was held in the school's gym. Happy 2013! Oh my, time does fly. I can hardly believe that 2012 went by so fast. As for me, I'm thrilled to be greeting this new year minus the royal purple cast I had on my right (driving) foot for the past month. Yep, I was pretty much a shut-in, since I couldn't drive. Not fun. But, so far this new year, so good - that pesky Achilles tendon that was so inflamed and painful (the reason for the cast) is now seemingly very happy - yay! I hope you are well on your way to meeting your resolutions for the new year.

There is not one tiny piece of candy left, not even a candy wrapper, after literally hundreds of trick-or-treaters cleaned out my sweet stash on Wednesday night. The little ghosts and goblins wandered down to my street directly from the ever-popular Montrose “Spooktacular” event. Whew! That is over with. We are now racing pell-mell to Thanksgiving and Christmas with scarcely a breath in between. Before I get catapulted into holiday reporting there are a couple of events to catch up with that happened here in town.

From that small group of boys has developed a strong group of high school boys and girls who now number over 50. They meet weekly in STEP class at La Cañada High, at lunch, and in members' homes.
