Large-scale construction projects are underway at two La Cañada supermarket complexes, forcing shoppers to navigate fences and concrete in addition to store aisles. Work at Plaza de La Cañada, at the northeast corner of Foothill Boulevard and Oakwood Avenue, is overlapping with work at the Ralphs shopping complex, at the northwest corner of Foothill Boulevard and Gould Avenue and is causing minor traffic disruption in and around their respective parking lots, according to officials.

Henry’s Farmer’s Market, a grocery store operating in 28 locations in San Diego, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, has expressed interest in leasing the former Sport Chalet site on Foothill Boulevard, it was confirmed by Fred Buss, senior planner in the city planning department. Henry’s is one of two groceries that has contacted the city about the facility in recent months; however, neither has initiated paperwork to begin a project there as of this week, Buss said.

Last week's E-ticket was the Gelson's La Cañada grand opening in Plaza de La Cañada . By 9 a.m. there was a line around the store. The crowds continued throughout the day, with shopper parking as far as one block away. You could almost feel the spirit of Bernie Gelson. In an 2005 interview with the Daily News, Jack Brown, then chair of the Stater Brothers groceries, explained that Bernie Gelson was a people person. “Bernie saw the customers as guests in his home. It was his way of life.” In that spirit, the La Cañada store was well-staffed for the opening day crowds.

Unions and grocery store representatives went back to the bargaining table on Wednesday, just days after the union members overwhelming voted to authorize a strike. "At this point a strike is authorized but that doesn't mean there will be one," said Brad Chase, spokesman for Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons grocery chains. Southern California union members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union voted overwhelmingly, a reported over 90 percent, to authorize a strike. "Over half our members voted," said Michael Shimpock, union spokesman.

Preliminary demolition work is underway at Plaza de La Cañada, ushering in the first phase of what shop owners say is a much needed overhaul of the site. Safeway, which owns the property, has secured a demolition permit for the former bank building that sits on the lot, Community Development Director Robert Stanley said. Interior improvements to the Vons grocery store, located within the shopping center at Oakwood Avenue and Foothill Boulevard, have also been authorized. Additional redesign plans, which include changes to the facade of the shopping complex, and the reconfiguration and re-landscaping of the parking lot, will go before the La Cañada Flintridge Design Commission today.

Henry's Market submits preliminary design The La Cañada Flintridge Design Commission will review today a preliminary design for Henry's Market, a new grocery store slotted to open in the old Sport Chalet building at 920 Foothill Blvd. The meeting, which is open to the public, begins at 7:30 a.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall, 1327 Foothill Blvd. Henry's Market, founded in San Diego in 1943, is known for its fresh produce and old-fashioned-market-style stores.

The long-vacant former Sport Chalet location on Foothill Boulevard moved one giant step closer to becoming a Henry's Market Tuesday night. In a discussion that ended with praise for Sun Valley architect James Cary, Planning Commission members unanimously approved a conditional-use permit and zoning change to allow for the restoration and reuse of the building as a 22,000 square-foot grocery store. "You've done a great job on improving a site that looked tired and worn. A nice market there will be a welcome addition," Commissioner Michael Cahill said, echoing the overall positive reception for architectural plans to spruce up the building.

Ten Years Ago A reception was held at Oakmont Country Club in honor of Dr. Mervyn Purdy, who retired after a 50-year career as a physician. For 36 of those years, Purdy was also the La Cañada school district physician. Twenty Years Ago Noel Ryan, 12, won the championship in his age group of the 1990 Pepsi West-L.A. County Parks and Recreation Basketball Parks and Recreation competition. A sixth-grader at La Cañada Elementary School, Ryan defeated a 13-year-old Alhambra boy by 16 points during the finals, held at halftime during a L.A. Clippers game.

Los Angeles County Sheriff?s deputies are searching for a man who threatened a woman with a metal baseball bat in the parking lot at Plaza de La Cañada on Wednesday. At approximately 2:30 p.m. Wednesday a 46-year-old woman and her elderly mother were looking for a parking space in front of Vons grocery store, Sgt. Ray Harley said. ?A parking spot opened up and she had to back up to maneuver into the spot,? Harley said. Once parked, the driver noticed a four-door white Toyota had pulled up behind her. A white male, approximately 60 to 70 years old, exited the vehicle, opened his trunk and pulled out a metal baseball bat, Harley said.

Ten Years Ago A press release was issued announcing that the largest, state-of-the-art Vons grocery store in La Cañada Flintridge would be constructed as part of the proposed Sport Chalet shopping center. (When that project did not come to fruition, Safeway, the parent company of Vons, purchased Plaza de La Cañada on Foothill at Oakwood and now has plans in place for a new Vons store there.)   Twenty Years Ago La Cañada Flintridge resident Michael Gross, star of TV’s “Family Ties,” joined Verdugo Hills Hospital’s Careful Cat mascot in urging families to begin a smoke-free tradition during the Great American Smokeout of 1987.
