Well-known Pasadena watercolor artist, Joe Stoddard, will be the demonstrating artist for the Verdugo Hills Art Association April meeting. This informative program will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 7. Non-VHAA members are cordially admitted for a $3 donation. The meeting will be held in the Citibank Community Room, 3250 Honolulu Ave., Montrose. After graduating from a Denver art school, Stoddard worked for a variety of graphic design firms. He went on to become part of the faculty of the Art Center in Pasadena and taught graphic design.

The Annual Student Art Show, "Give Us Your Best," opens today (Thursday, May 17) at the Glendale Community College Art Gallery and continues through June 7. A reception will be held for the student artists today from noon to 2 p.m. in the gallery. Art from all the disciplines will be represented including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, watercolor, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Admission to the art show and reception is free and is open to the public. The gallery is located in the Library Building.

Ever since my family entered the La Cañada school system I have heard from some sources that, while the La Cañada Unified School District seems to have programs and services to enrich or help the high achieving and special needs students, the middle students are sometimes left to fend for themselves and can end up falling between the cracks, especially if they only need help in one or two subjects. And, in fact, I have seen this situation happen with some friends’ children in the past, particularly when those students are quiet and shy and sit in the back of the class.

Joseph and Nancy Abbott of La Cañada Flintridge announce the engagement of their son Craig to Philina Burkholder. Craig is a 1986 graduate of La Cañada High School and received his bachelor?s degree in computer science in 1991 from UC Irvine. He is a development manager with Oracle in Pleasanton, Calif. Philina is the daughter of Donald Burkholder of Medford, Ore. She was born in Colorado Springs, Colo., and graduated from Westmont High in Campbell, Calif. She received her bachelor?

A July wedding date has been selected by Heather McCutcheon and her fiance, Jason Lighthart. Heather is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary McCutcheon of La Crescenta. Jason is the son of William Lighthart of Sunland and Kari Lighthart of La Crescenta. Both are graduates of Crescenta Valley High School. The bride-elect graduated cum laude with a master's in occupational therapy from Loma Linda University and is currently a pediatric occupational therapist. The bridgegroom owns his own business and will graduate in June with a bachelor's degree in graphic design from California State University, Northridge.

The Verdugo Hills Art Association meeting on Friday Jan. 8, will feature award-winning figurative watercolorist Ted Nuttal. Nuttal?s work has appeared on the cover of American Artist?s Watercolor magazine in 2003 and 2008. Nuttal is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, Western Federation of Watercolorists and Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Nuttal?s unique painting expression focuses on capturing the quiet underlying character of people.

The Folk Tree presents the prints of La Mano Press artists Daniel Gonzalez, Ixrael, Poli Marichal and Artemio Rodriguez, as well as a selection of mixed media pieces by Miguel Angel Murillo from Aug. 28 to Sept. 25. A reception for the artists will be held Aug. 28 from 2 to 6 p.m. La Mano Press was founded by Rodriguez, originally from Mexico, who now resides in Los Angeles. La Mano Press is an organization whose mission is to increase the appreciation of printmaking in general, and specifically to promote the work of local and international artists who share a similar vision.

Boy Scout Troop 398 awards art badges La Cañada Boy Scout Troop 398 earned their graphic arts merit badge after three sessions of graphic design and a tour of a printing facility. The graphic arts merit badge counselor was lead by local graphic and Web designer Jennifer Swain. They created their own logo and a design for a film festival T-shirt. They also created a design using printmaking techniques. The logo was digitally printed by Ford Graphics onto pads of paper that the scouts got to take home.

A final version of the La Cañada Unified School District's 2005-06 school accountability report card was presented to the governing board Tuesday evening and approved unanimously. The report was made by Lindi Dreibelbis-Arthur, LCUSD's director of assessment. Information includes the condition and performance of each school in the district and is required to be made available to parents of district students. In other business, Board member Joel Peterson presented a summary report of joint use committee findings with the city of La Cañada Flintridge and the district, praising their efforts for their work in achieving the goals.
