Armed with plenty of stability and depth, the La Cañada High boys' golf team appears ready to turn the corner with its sites set on qualifying for the state tournament. La Cañada Coach Richard Tetu said it wouldn't shock him if the Spartans qualified as a team or sent multiple players to the event in June. “This team has got such incredible depth in that we have 12 players who can compete at the varsity level,” said Tetu, whose team will look to win an eight consecutive Rio Hondo League championship.

PASADENA - Things have come together quite nicely for the La Cañada High boys' golf team during the first month of the season. With lofty expectations which include winning the program's first state tournament, the Spartans have adjusted well thus far having won two tournaments and compiling an unblemished record. La Cañada continued its winning ways Tuesday afternoon, as sophomore Collin Morikawa shot a two-over-par 72 to help the visiting Spartans earn a 384-433 nonleague victory against rival Crescenta Valley at Brookside Golf Course No. 2. “We have gotten off to an amazing start, plus we like our depth,” said Morikawa, who earned medalist honors and is the reigning All-Area Boys' Golfer of the Year after leading the Spartans (9-0)

It?s always a beautiful day for golf. For La Cañada, at least. The Spartans hosted Temple City on Tuesday and ended up dominating the Rams (9-4, 4-2 in league), 172-225. The 172 was the second-lowest score in La Cañada golf (11-4, 6-0) history, only one stroke off from the record, 171, set last year. Since high school golf counts the best five out of six scores of the match from each team, La Cañada?s top five scorers shot under 37 at La Cañada Flintridge Country Club?

The sun is out, but not too hot. No wind. No rain. A great day to golf. Here comes the foursome. They are wonderful guys. Likeable. Fun. Today, they are happy. Their banter is infectious. Jack Houston. Joe Rafaelli. Jim Fisher. Andrew Torres. Of course, they had a Thursday Club connection.

When anyone speaks of the Verdugo Hills Golf Course I’m reminded of one of my favorite experiences in life, the spectacularly clear, late Sunday afternoon in the early ’80s when I whupped my husband there during a “friendly” round of golf. His first tee shot soared into a tree and never dropped to terra firma, giving me an early lead. It was the first time I had smelled victory in any contest with him other than in a game of Scrabble. The confidence that came from realizing Mr. I’m-Better-At-Sports-Than-You-Are had made such an error on the first hole of an easy, three-par course propelled me to beat him on all nine holes we played that day. (He wasn’t about to go for 18 after that.

PASADENA - There appears to be a healthy respect in the rivalry between the La Cañada High and Crescenta Valley boys' golf teams. The Spartans and Falcons normally compete against each other multiple times during the regular season before both teams compete in the same division of the CIF Southern Section playoffs. With their respective league tournaments on deck, La Cañada and Crescenta Valley met Wednesday in a nonleague match. With strong winds whipping up across the course and debris covering parts of the greens, La Cañada received a one-under-par 35 from Collin Morikawa to earn a 190-213 victory at Brookside Golf Course No. 1. “It's just a good test when you go up against CV and we try to play a tough schedule,” said La Cañada first-year Coach Rich Wheeler, who guided the Spartans (19-3)

PASADENA - Shortly after the La Cañada High and St. Francis boys' golf teams arrived at Brookside Golf Course No. 2 to compete in a nonleague match Monday, it didn't take long to spot a potential inconvenience on the greens. PHOTOS: St. Francis vs. La Cañada boys' golf The venue recently underwent aerfication, designed to loosen soil that has been compacted by golfers walking over it and leading to the greens featuring a lot of sand and divots. The nuisance didn't seem to bother Collin Morikawa much, though, as he carded a three-under par 32 to earn medalist honors and help La Cañada register a 179-199 victory.

BURBANK - With a tremendous amount of depth throughout the La Cañada High boys' golf team's lineup, it's no coincidence the Spartans have been on quite a streak lately. From top to bottom, the La Cañada High boys' golf team might have the pieces in place to advance to the CIF State Tournament in June. Until then, the Spartans have some goals along the way. One of the main ones will be shooting for a 10th straight Rio Hondo League championships with Collin Morikawa, Joshua Suh and Robby Stehlin back leading the charge. While a decade-long stretch of league dominance would merit satisfaction for some teams, the Spartans ultimately want to take the next step.

It wasn't too long ago when coach Rich Wheeler helped set up the La Cañada High girls' golf team for its inaugural season. That occurred in 2010, when Wheeler and assistant Richard Tetu searched around campus to find potential golfers. After finding a formidable cast of athletes willing to learn and continue to sharpen their skills, Wheeler is now set to coach a couple of the original players for their senior seasons. “Where did the time go?” said Wheeler, whose team took third in the Pacific League behind Crescenta Valley and Arcadia and tied for 15th at the CIF Southern Section Central Team Divisional in 2012.
