Few people may be aware that most museums and botanical gardens offer select days and times that admission is free or discounted to the public. And some museums never charge for entrance to their collections, like the Getty, California African American and Nethercutt Automotive Museum. ?We feel it is important to keep admission to both the Getty Center and the Getty Villa free of charge to allow as many people as possible to enjoy our collections and grounds,? said John Giruini, assistant director for public affairs at The J. Paul Getty Museum.

The Getty is issuing an open call to amateur shutterbugs to submit their personal photographs online for an ambitious, large-scale display of family pictures on the Web. This virtual album will pay tribute to the humble snapshot and its artistic and social value, a theme explored in the new exhibition "Close to Home: An American Album," which opened Oct. 12 at the Getty Center. The exhibition and online album are part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the Getty's photographs collection.

Getty Center: Los Angeles ? Admission is free. Parking is $10, but goes up to $15 July 1. Tuesday ? Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Expect to see European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture and decorative arts, and European and American photographs. The end of the calendar year is traditionally a time of reflection when many La Cañadans gather together to take down the decorations, drink a gin fizz or two and bake lasagna for the float builders. In the spirit of year-end contemplation, the following is my annual top ten list of Southern California?s greatest places, in and around the 91011. 1 ) Shop at the Apple Cart. Nothing says La Cañada like The Apple Cart. The ladies are nice. There are complimentary cookies and seasonal hot beverages.

Ask most people what first comes to mind at the mention of Thanksgiving and, more than likely, they will reply "a feast, a harvest, lots of good food." The "Tender Land: Pasadena Festival of Art, History, Music and Science" is entering into the spirit of the Thanksgiving season by offering the community a veritable cornucopia of cultural food for the soul throughout the remainder of November. Whether a concert or a lecture, an exhibition or a panel discussion, all events will reflect one theme - a theme actually quite well suited for Thanksgiving - mankind's relationship with nature and the environment, "the tender land" we share.
