Dreier on energy, Georgia disupte Congressman David Dreier joined other Republican members in calling for a vote on a comprehensive energy plan. Dreier is an original co-sponsor of H.R. 6566, the American Energy Act, which is designed to promote domestic refineries, renewable and alternative energy solutions, and development of oil shale reserves. He said, “Hopefully, Speaker Pelosi will bring us back for a vote on a real energy policy.” Dreier, a member of the House Democracy Assistance Commission, expressed firm support for the president’s action to back the Republic of Georgia in its armed dispute with Russia.

ARCADIA ? The Savannah Travel Troop from Girl Scouts, Mt. Wilson Vista Council, will host a Fashion Show and Tea fundraiser at 1 and 4 p.m. Sept. 23 at Arcadia Community Center, 365 Campus Drive in Arcadia, both shows and teas will feature tasty tea treats and a fashion show of historic Girl Scout uniforms modeled by girls. In addition, the 1 p.m. event will feature a tribute to the Silver Trefoils, a group of dedicated life-long Girl Scouts now in their 70s. Each event will feature boutique sales and themed gift baskets, for which opportunity drawing tickets may be purchased.

Michelle Morris was surprised when her mom handed her the May 24th issue of Sports Illustrated and she saw her name and face staring back at her with a small write-up. Sports Illustrated included Morris in a "Faces in the Crowd" segment. The item chronicled how the La Cañada High graduate propelled the University of Georgia to win the NCAA Varsity Equestrian National Championship during a sudden-death ride-off. "It's always our goal to get to that point and win the national championship," Morris said.

Local equestrian national champ La Cañada resident Michelle Morris won the NCAA Varsity Equestrian Individual National Championship in Waco, Texas, this month. Morris, who rides on the University of Georgia equestrian team, was one of eight riders seeded for the individual competition. The Georgia team was also the national champion in the Huntseat Division and the overall champions of the Varsity National Championships. Morris is a 2008 graduate of La Cañada High School, where she rode for the school’s Interscholastic Equestrian League Team all four years.

While the La Cañada girls' varsity basketball team was sweeping the Glendora High Tournament last Dec. 27, the girls' freshman/sophomore cagers were doing the same. Participating in their 13th annual tournament, the Spartans sweep through the first three days, defeating teams from San Dimas, Azusa and Los Osos. La Cañada went up against South Hills in the tournament championship game on Dec. 30. The contest started with the teams nearly matching each other in points scored in the first quarter.

Trombone mega-star Bill Watrous will perform with the La Cañada High School jazz band in a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 27 at Lanterman Auditorium. Watrous, a band leader, studio musician and club performer, will lead students in songs including "Mama Llama Samba," "Never Let Me Go," "Last Great Georgia Extravaganza" and "Village Dance." The LCHS concert band, symphonic band and wind ensemble will also perform. The concert will be a benefit to raise money for the Patio Project, an improvement project at LCHS in which lunch tables, benches and landscaping will be installed outside the new band room.

Very few first ladies have stood so close to the center of power in American government and have understood so well the hopes and dreams of the American people as Rosalynn Carter. Carter will make a rare public speaking appearance in Pasadena as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. This small-town girl inspired the nation with her independence and commanded the world's attention when she traveled the globe as a special presidential envoy.

Voters in the two local Congressional districts followed the state trend in supporting Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary, and John McCain in the Republican. In the 26th District that includes La Cañada Flintridge, represented by Republican David Dreier, Clinton received 54% of the Democratic vote, to 40% for Barack Obama. Sen. John Edwards, who just dropped out of the race, received 3.4%. Among Republicans, McCain received 44%, to 36.5% for Mitt Romney. Mike Huckabee received 10.5%.

The second annual Commemoration of Our Lady of Guadalupe will take place on her Feast Day, Dec. 12, at the St Bede the Venable Catholic Church in La Cañada Flintridge at 215 Foothill Blvd. The Mariachi celebration of Mass will begin at 6:30 p.m. A Fiesta celebration will follow the Mass and will include samples of Latin American dishes. The commemoration event was organized by Our Lady of Guadalupe committees, led by Angie Prime, with concurrence of the St Bede Pastor, Monsignor Jim Gehl.
