Hundreds of local shoppers lined up along La Cañada's Foothill Boulevard last Thursday morning to celebrate the opening of a new Gelson's Market and enjoy several free samples and treats celebrating the grocery chain's 18th location. The turnout - an estimated 350 to 500 people flooded Plaza de La Cañada in the first hour alone - was higher than anticipated, as shoppers waited in segmented groups to enter, like a crowd lining up for a roller coaster. “We thought we would may have 100 or 150 people here this morning,” said marketing director Yvonne Manganaro.

After months of planning and preparation , Gelson's Markets will open its new La Cañada store Thursday, March 27 with a 9 a.m. grand opening event. The new store, located at 635 Foothill Blvd. in the Plaza de La Cañada, is the 18th for the Los Angeles-area supermarket chain, which operated a site in Pasadena's Paseo Colorado mall for 13 years before closing last June. The opening will allow Gelson's to retain its Foothills customer base while allowing the business to expand into neighboring cities like Glendale, marketing director Yvonne Manganaro said in an earlier interview . The first 200 visitors to turn out for the grand opening event will receive special prizes, including a commemorative keepsake box of Gelson's chocolates, vouchers for free goods and a bag filled with items valued at $60, according to Manganaro.

Winter will soon be behind us and spring will come. All over town, restaurateurs and mixologists are planning for their spring comeback. My first choice for a good meal is Café Sole, because the new owners, Salvatore and Alessandra Attanasio are lovely and the new menu is top notch. Salvatore bakes fresh bread several times a day. Sporadic specials include osso buco, Italian meatloaf and wonderful pastas. Great service. The Flintridge Proper introduced a daily Happy Hour, launched four new spring cocktails and posted most of the recipes online at www.theproper.com.

Last week's E-ticket was the Gelson's La Cañada grand opening in Plaza de La Cañada . By 9 a.m. there was a line around the store. The crowds continued throughout the day, with shopper parking as far as one block away. You could almost feel the spirit of Bernie Gelson. In an 2005 interview with the Daily News, Jack Brown, then chair of the Stater Brothers groceries, explained that Bernie Gelson was a people person. “Bernie saw the customers as guests in his home. It was his way of life.” In that spirit, the La Cañada store was well-staffed for the opening day crowds.
