I hope all you moms had a nice celebration on your special day last weekend. I certainly did. I traveled to Northern California to be with my son, Chris, and daughter, Heather, and their respective families. It was especially joyful to once again to be with Chris' kids. They have all just returned from their three-and-a-half year residence in England. Aidan, 11, Lucan, 9, and Morgan, 4, are happy to be back in their own home again and to see their school chums of long ago. They all have nuances of a British accent that is very charming.

On Monday morning, Veterans Day, I was so focused on my computer screen that it seemed that the rest of the world had disappeared. Like a pesky fly, a low but persistent sound penetrated my consciousness. I was taken out of time and place because it was the sound of vintage fixed-winged airplanes emerging from a distance and the sound grew to a deep rumble and rattled the loose pane of glass in my office window as they flew right over my house. A thousand thoughts raced through my mind.

Hundreds of costumed children made their way to my doorstep last Thursday night for Halloween treats. I ran out of the goodies earlier than expected so this witch had to shut off the lights and pretend she wasn't at home. I thought when dawn came I would be seeing candy wrappers blowing across my lawn. Instead, the only remnant that the marauding candy horde left in its wake was a beautiful red feather that had once belonged to somebody with an exotic crimson boa - it was a sweet reminder of All Hallow's Eve. -- The La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn.
