With the tone of the voice in Poltergeist—“they’re heeere…” the grocery store shelves are full of them and have been for weeks! Halloween is only one day, yet candy makes its appearance weeks early, ensuring those little “fun-size” candy bars can make their way to every desktop and lunchbox in town---way ahead of schedule. I live with a public relations executive. I’ve seen the lengths that marketing companies will go to get their stuff “out there” so the rest of us can get sucked in to an impulse purchase or two. Let’s look at exactly what you get with a bag of those “fun-size” bars.

Letters to the Editor High fructose corn syrup facts offered The Oct. 23 article by Loa Blasucci, “All Health’s Breaking Loose: Trick? or Treat?,” may mislead consumers about high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup, sugar, and several fruit juices are all nutritionally the same. High fructose corn syrup has the same number of calories as sugar and is handled similarly by the body. The American Medical Association in June 2008 helped put to rest misunderstandings about this sweetener and obesity, stating that “high fructose corn syrup does not appear to contribute to obesity more than other caloric sweeteners.

When I was a kid, we had a pet monkey named Bono (as in Sonny, not like the rock star in U-2). She was great at parties - balloons and cake are gratuitous when there's a monkey around. I knew two things about Bono: She loved bananas and she was really smart. The more I learn about bananas, the more I realize just how smart she was. Just two bananas can provide enough energy for a hard-core 90-minute workout. Athletes love them for the quick release of sustained energy that comes from the three natural sugars - fructose, sucrose and glucose.

Loa Blasucci Well, we've finally done it. We've turned a big corner, there are now more overweight people than starving people on this planet of ours. We are in the midst of a crisis and getting heavier. Maybe you have a few pounds to lose and you think to yourself, "Am I part of this crisis? But, I'm a conscientious person, how did I become part of a national epidemic?" Last week, I was with a group of friends and the conversation turned, as it often does, to weight control.
