A Ford Explorer smashed through a fence and into a fire hydrant just after 5 p.m. Saturday near the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club in the 5000 block of Godbey Drive. According to Sgt. Mark Slater of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff?s Station, Thomas Henn, 65, of Glendale, drove his Explorer over the side of the hill and tumbled over the edge of Godbey Drive. On the way over he hit a fire hydrant, which caused a water spout. There were no reports of serious injuries. Henn was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after tests showed he was over the legal limit of .08%.

An elderly married couple from La Crescenta were killed Tuesday morning after their Ford Explorer slammed into a tree in the 5400 block of Pine Glen Road in La Crescenta. Danette Erickson, a member of the Crescenta Valley Town Council, identified the couple as Charles and Frances Crutchfield of La Crescenta, although authorities would not confirm their names pending notification of family members. California Highway Patrol officer Andre Primeaux said an 84-year-old woman was behind the wheel and her 81-year-old husband was in the passenger seat when the accident occurred at about 9:55 a.m. A witness who was driving his vehicle southbound on Pine Glen Road told officers he noticed the Explorer traveling at a high rate of speed when it passed him on the left before attempting to get back into the correct lane.

Ten Years Ago La Cañada resident Kathleen Warner was the winner of a new Ford Explorer in a Vons supermarket contest. During a local chamber of commerce mixer, then-La Cañada Vons manager Louie Juarez presented Warner with a gift certificate to Paradise Ford in Montrose, where she could claim her new vehicle. Twenty Years Ago To celebrate 10 years of its existence, the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. held an “Anniversary Spring Fling” at Descanso Gardens, hosted by the Descanso Gardens Guild.

Oak Grove, La Cañada, a student left her trunk unlocked while it was parked in the La Cañada High School parking lot. Her purse was stolen from the trunk in the 4400 block between 1:20 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Mayfield Ave., La Crescenta, a 1996 Honda Civic was reported stolen from in front of a home in the 2700 block in the early morning on Saturday. Area 1 3000 block of Altura Avenue: The rear window of a Ford Explorer was smashed sometime between 6:50 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3. Nothing was taken from the vehicle, which was parked in front of its owner's home. It was unknown what object was used to smash the window. 2200 block of Montrose Avenue: An estimated $8,950 worth of vandalism was inflicted on a Black Nissan Altima when it was keyed and battered with a baseball bat or similar object sometime between 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1 and 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2. Scratches and dents covered the entire vehicle, and letters were scratched into the trunk, according to the report.

La Cañada Flintridge Nov. 1 Auto burglary: 4700 block of Hayman Avenue, 6:30 p.m. A resident discovered that sometime in the two days prior, a locked Hyundai sedan had been entered, a wallet had been taken and several charges had been made to debit card in wallet. Burglary: 5800 block of Briartree Drive, between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Rear sliding glass door shattered, two gold bracelets taken. Theft: 4800 block of Crown Avenue, 10 p.m. or later. A cellphone, sunglasses and leather portfolio were taken from an unlocked Mercedes sedan.
