“We're safe on Mars.” La Cañada Flintridge's connection to the heavens made for a sensational story in 2012, as Jet Propulsion Laboratory safely landed the NASA rover Curiosity on the Red Planet. JPL engineer Al Chen made the announcement to hollers and high-fives at JPL's Mission Control Center at 10:32 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5. The landing featured new technology including a parachute to slow the rover from 13,000 mph and a “sky crane” suspended in the Martian air to ease the impact of the craft's touchdown in the Gale Crater.

Dec. 17 Drug use: Foothill Boulevard and Ocean View Boulevard, 1:50 a.m. A man spotted walking on Foothill Boulevard admitted to having used methamphetamine.

The Habit Hamburger Grill will open in La Cañada Town Center in early December, raising funds for local charities before its official grand opening, according to the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds from sales made from noon to 2 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3 will go to local charities. The restaurant's official grand opening is on Dec. 5. Forty years ago, more than 1,000 La Cañada Flintridge residents set foot on the Foothill (210) Freeway for the first and likely only time, toasting the completion of the highway. They danced, dined and drank on the roadway during the fundraiser hosted by the Assistance League of Flintridge. Decades later, those party-goers remember the freeway's arrival as a major change to life in La Cañada - but mostly as a good one. Oct. 10 Forgery: 500 block of Foothill Boulevard, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. A woman discovered that a check for $120 that had been mailed to a caretaker never reached its intended recipient, but had been cashed in Culver City with the dates and names on it altered. Oct. 12 Attempted burglary: 600 block of Houseman Street, 10:30 a.m. A woman noticed that her window screen was falling off, and upon inspection, saw fingerprints on the windowsill, and that the flowers below had been stepped on. The window did not appear to have been opened, and nothing appeared to have been stolen from the home.

The 2012 La Cañada High School Homecoming Court enjoyed a regal introduction at halftime of La Cañada's home football game Friday night against South Pasadena. The Homecoming celebration began with a 3 p.m. parade along Foothill Boulevard that featured floats created by each class. Cruising down the boulevard were a variety of trucks and cars converted into Halloween-appropriate floats such as the “Senior Skellingston” and “Ghostly Juniors.” The Class of 2013 was followed by the Spartan football team and cheerleading squads, each seated on trucks from county Fire Station 82 and escorted by sheriff's patrol cars.

Primary construction on the Jessen Drive Bridge and approaching roadways is complete and estimates are that final construction on the project will end in the first week of November, according to city Public Works staff. Work currently taking place on Foothill Boulevard at Verdugo Boulevard is a Southern California Edison infrastructure upgrade project, and does not have a set completion date but must be finished before a moratorium expires in November. Sept. 23 Theft: 2100 block of Tondolea Lane, before 9:45 a.m. Apple iPod taken from a Honda Accord. La Crescenta/ Montrose Sept. 21 Burglary: 2564 Foothill Boulevard, 1:13 p.m. A man was arrested for placing a credit card “skimming” device and a small camera on the ATM at the U.S. Bank after a customer told employees he was loitering suspiciously.

A teen pedestrian and a motorcyclist were hurt when the motorcycle struck the boy as he jaywalked on Foothill Boulevard in La Canada Flintridge on Friday night, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The boy, 14, was crossing Foothill against the light just west of the intersection with Angeles Crest Highway at around 10:07 p.m.  when a motorcycle traveling west on Foothill hit him. The teen was carried about 50 feet on the windshield of the bike before falling to the street, according to the sheriff's department.

Sept. 20 Identity theft: 2400 block of Foothill Boulevard, 3:13 p.m. A woman discovered as part of a credit check that her Social Security number had been used without her authorization on employment forms in Pennsylvania. Sept. 21 Battery/child endangerment: 900 block of Coral Way, 1:15 p.m. A man prevented his wife from leaving their home following an argument about their pending separation, grabbing car keys and pushing her down.
