Someone should tell the Spartans there are easier ways to win games. Only 24 seconds left, Fillmore had the ball, down by a point, 56-55. On the inbound pass, Fillmore put up a good shot that hit off the rim and bounced into the hands of La Cañada’s Courtney McCutchan, who passed it to Tia Chen, and the Spartans girls’ basketball team walked away with the victory, 57-55. The win, along with victories over La Salle and Flintridge Sacred Heart, got the Spartans (11-2)

La Cañada’s 14U tournament softball team won the Sixth Annual Carpinteria Beach Classic Softball Tournament for its second consecutive tournament championship. After defeating Fillmore and Seaside of Oxnard in pool play, La Cañada squeaked out a 2-1 semi-final rematch vs Fillmore. With the score tied 1-1 in the sixth inning, Catherine Horner singled with two outs, stole second and then scored the winning run on a hit-and-run single by Lauren Cox. With two outs and a Fillmore runner on third base in the last inning, shortstop Stephanie Bathke made a phenomenal over the shoulder catch of a short fly ball to seal the victory.

Backyard gardeners of all ages with a passion for tomatoes turned out Saturday and Sunday at Descanso Gardens to experience the annual "Tomatomania!" sale of heirloom and hybrid varieties of the plant. Those who wanted to learn how to get the best harvest this year were also able to take advantage of a free class, "How to grow perfect tomatoes," offered on Descanso's expansive Main Lawn. PHOTOS: Tomatomania at Descanso Gardens The "Tomatomania!" community of experts, led by Scott Daigre, owner of Powerplant Garden Design in Ojai, was launched at the former Hortus in Pasadena.

Spartans rolling in Winter Ball La Cañada girls? basketball beat Burbank, 47-25, and Fillmore, 46-30, in the La Cañada Winter Ball Classic. They played Chaminade late Wednesday after press deadline. If they won, they?ll play the winner later today. The Spartans are 11-2 on the season. ? LC rebounds after loss to Canyon Canyon seems to be beating everyone, these days. Canyon defeated La Cañada boys? soccer team, 1-0, in the first game of pool play of the La Cañada Tournament.

Following up from their second place finish in the San Clemente tournament, the La Cañada U10 Gold Softball team brought home the gold as the 2009 Moorpark Tournament Champions. La Cañada went undefeated in the tournament, posting a 5-0 record and outscoring their opponents 35-2 along the way. Hanna Heileson pitched a no hitter against Fillmore in the semi-final game. In the Championship game, La Cañada faced a rematch with a very tough Torrance squad they had beaten 1-0 a day earlier.

La Cañada girls’ basketball came in second place at the La Cañada Winter Ball Classic, losing to Serra in the finals, 58-35. Only four Spartans scored in the game with seniors Courtney McCutchan, 15 points, and Tia Chen, 13 points, leading the way. La Cañada beat Burbank and Fillmore and edged Chaminade, 45-41, just before New Year’s to get into the finals. “[Against Serra] we were up by four at the half,” said La Cañada Head Coach Tamar Hill.

La Cañada's 12U-Gold softball team placed second out of 16 teams in the Carpinteria Beach Classic tournament this past weekend, losing 3-2 to West Valley Red (Gold) in an exciting championship game. Catherine Horner's double followed by a Lauren Cox home run gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but West Valley scored three in the fourth playing outstanding "small ball" with three infield hits. In four tournaments entered, La Cañada has made it to the championship game every time with two first place and two second place finishes.
