Jane Napier Neely I could hardly believe my eyes last Tuesday when I woke up and the sun was shining. Mayhaps the June gloom is disappearing, what do ya think? But then I hate it when it gets so hot we can barely breathe. I would much rather it be cold and I can add layers of clothing to keep warm than when it is so stifling that you turn the thermostat to frigid and camp in front of the nearest vent. According to reports it seems that the proposed hike in electrical costs will not be an incentive to use air conditioning at all this summer.

"We like to think of it [the Fiesta Days Croquet Tournament] as the unofficial Fiesta Days kickoff," said Jim Kambe, organizer of the Fiesta Days Croquet Tournament for Lanterman House museum, which was held over two days this past weekend. The tournament was divided into two divisions: the adult teams and the one child one adult teams. A total of 27 teams competed Saturday on the large grassy portion of Memorial Park that was roped off into four separate fields set aside for the tournament.

O ur city's Fiesta Days were a great success. It has been said that everybody loves a parade, and it certainly is true here in La Cañada. Our Memorial Day parade is the epitome of every small-town America celebration. Red, white and blue patriotism is always the color scheme, and it is a stellar flag-waving event. Sunday evening's fireworks show in the park was pretty darn awesome. Thank you, Allen Lund, for your generosity by giving our city this star-spangled, multicolored display of oohs and ahhs.

After a ceremony honoring veterans in La Cañada Flintridge on Monday, Ron Dietel reflected on those he has lost. His mother, father and uncle all served in World War II. His uncle died during the war and his parents have since passed away. Dietel, himself an officer in the U.S. Air Force from 1974-83, sees Memorial Day as a somber holiday. On a sunny Monday, hundreds of La Cañada Flintridge residents braved 80-degree heat to take in the colorful Fiesta Days parade after honoring La Cañada's fallen members of the military at a somber Memorial Day service. Residents turned out to line Foothill Boulevard for the parade, which turned the city's main thoroughfare from Cornishon to Gould avenues into a colorful procession of classic cars, fire trucks and proud marchers. Parade dignitaries included elected officials and, as grand marshals, the current and past chairs of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors Fiesta Days and is celebrating its 100th year.

A car show at Memorial Park was the first dazzler of the weekend at the park, which will host a fireworks show Sunday night, a Memorial Day service Monday, and serve as a fine spot to watch the launch of Monday's parade. The La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. threw open its doors to educate the public about the float-making process.
