New Year's resolutions? Bah! Humbug! When I am assisted by a hot toddy, a nice dinner, witty talk and a glass of vintage wine, I have honest and honorable intentions toward the idea of making resolutions for the New Year. As the days wear on, the resolutions, plans, pep talks and good ideas wear off - and by the end of January, the enviable objectives have gone. Back are the old habits (some good, actually), but other new ideas have been shattered on the rocks of our too-busy lives.

Don’t worry about losing the warm familiar feeling of Conrad’s Family Restaurant — or many of its beloved menu items — in the coming month as the Oakwood Avenue at Foothill Boulevard landmark changes owners and gains a new moniker and signage. The restaurant — with a new location-descriptive name of the Oakwood Café — is being purchased from longtime owner Nick Bissias, by his son, Peter, who has been an employee at the business for much of adult his life.

A June 30 wedding is planned for Erin Pamela Goldman and Gabi Aron Wolper. The couple became engaged this past July in Monteverde, Costa Rica while hiking through the rainforest. Erin is the daughter of James Goldman and Judy Gottschalk. She grew up in the San Fernando Valley and Manhattan Beach and graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Erin works as a college counselor at a high school in Los Angeles. Gabi is the son of Don and Carol Wolper. He grew up in La Cañada and graduated from La Cañada High School in 1995.

Nominations are being sought by the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada for the honor of 2007 La Cañadan of the Year. For 56 years the local club has honored an individual or couple, for long-term broad based involvement in volunteer community service, demonstrated leadership qualities, and their active role in bringing positive recognition to themselves and to the community of La Cañada Flintridge. This year, the event will take place at Descanso Gardens, Van de Kamp Hall, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge on Wednesday, May 7 at 11:45 a.m. The criteria for selection are: long-term and current broad-based involvement in volunteer community service such as religious, youth, senior citizen and/or other civic activities; demonstrated leadership qualities that show initiative.

It’s been more than a decade since Bronson Pharmaceuticals President Ray Hensley purchased the company and moved it from its longtime Rinetti Lane location across the street to the Plaza de La Cañada, Von’s shopping center. Hensley was known to many of his longtime customers as a walking dictionary, his daughter, Linda Hensley said, adding that “no one could run the business as good as my dad.” Linda Hensley, 54, worked with her dad at Bronson Pharmaceuticals for most of her adult life, doing “a bit of everything,” including bookkeeping, creating literature packets, running the cash register and helping customers.

The $4.7 million sale this week of a La Cañada Flintridge retail property at 2200 Foothill Blvd. isn’t expected to have any major impact on Pier 1 Imports, the business that leases the property; however, it is a good sign for commercial real estate sales, a representative of Stevenson Real Estate Services, the company that marketed the property, said Tuesday. “This shows that assets priced appropriately in the market place are selling,” said Sevada Hemelians, of Stevenson Real Estate Services.

Penguin’s Frozen Yogurt Place is celebrating its 20th anniversary in La Cañada, and no one is more surprised than owner Loretta Chicoine. “I’m not proud so much as still in shock,” Chicoine joked of her family-owned shop’s stamina. “When I first started out, I kept thinking, ‘Am I going to make it?’ And now, here I am 20 years later,” she said. Chicoine and her staff will present a 20th anniversary party from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at Penguin’s, which is at 711 Foothill Blvd.

Each year, since 1951, the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada selects and honors an individual or couple as “La Cañadan(s) of the Year” based on current and long-term broad based involvement in volunteer community service, demonstrated leadership qualities, and their active role in bringing positive recognition to themselves and to the community of La Cañada Flintridge. The winner is honored at a Kiwanis luncheon. This year, the event will take place at Descanso Gardens, Van de Kamp Hall, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6. Letters have been sent to community leaders soliciting candidates for this recognition.

The Piano Factory Group, Inc., headquartered in Burbank, has been one of Southern California's leading retailers of pianos with five locations spread over the Southland. This is a family business headed by Rhoda Treibitz and run by her and her son, Glenn, and her daughter, Cheryl Fox. Nearly 10 months ago Rhoda Treibitz, CEO and owner of the company, decided to retire and sell the stores. The company sold or closed four of its five locations, and brought much of that merchandise to Burbank for a liquidation sale in its Burbank location, which they intended to close or sell.
