July 4 celebration from Country Club Under a near full moon, and amidst a temperature perfect summer night , almost 300 members and guests ( more accurate count is 277) of La Cañada Flintridge Country Club celebrated our nation?s independence. After feasting on Southern-style ribs, corn on the cob and swordfish skewers and dancing to the Jennifer Gates Quintet, everyone rearranged their chairs for the big July 4 show of fireworks. At the club?s elevation, fireworks were visible all the way to the coast, however the Rose Bowl display was the closest and certainly the most impressive.

The third annual 2nd Lt. Andrew Torres Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, July 9, at La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. Torres, a 23-year-old Marine and graduate of Palm Crest Elementary School, Flintridge Prep and Annapolis who lost a two-year battle with a rare form of liver cancer on April 3, 2004, asked his parents and friends to help find a cure. Funds raised go directly to Huntington Medical Research Institutes (HMRI), an independent medical research non-profit in Pasadena, which is respected and renowned for its groundbreaking work in cancer research as well as research for other debilitating diseases.

New president for the CVWD board Vasken Yardemian has been elected 2009 president of the Crescenta Valley Water District Governing Boad. CVWD serves a small portion of La Cañada Flintridge. ?I am honored to have the vote of confidence of my colleagues to lead the Water District as well as serving Crescenta Valley Community,? Yardemian stated. The CVWD provides water to over 8200 accounts representing a population of approximately 34,000. The agency is governed by a five-member board of directors elected-at-large by the registered voters within CVWD.

This week the working relationship between Crescenta Valley Sheriff?s Station and Altadena station was highlighted with four arrests being made in two incidents. The first crime occurred at about 1 a.m. Monday at the La Cañada Pizza Hut parking lot in the 900 block of Foothill. According to Sgt. Ray Harley, two employees were walking through the parking lot to their cars when a gray Toyota Camry with tinted windows pulled out of a nearby alley. ?A suspect exited the vehicle and approached one of the employees,?

One Colorado and the Armory Center for the Arts are ready to celebrate the summer with the acclaimed children's series Kids in the Courtyard , which consists of participatory, live performances followed by art workshops led by the Armory Center for the Arts, Thursdays in July at 11 a.m. in the One Colorado Courtyard. All performances and activities take place under the big umbrellas in the Courtyard on Colorado Boulevard between Fair Oaks and DeLacey in Pasadena, and are free and open to the public.

Rosa May Scheele-Knarreborg, a lifelong area resident, passed away on Oct. 8, 2004 in La Crescenta, following a valiant, ten-year battle with cancer. The older of two children, Rosa May was born to Emil and Mable Scheele on Sept. 24, 1917, in the then-family residence at the corner of Fair Oaks Avenue and Mountain View in Altadena, where her parents owned and operated Mountain View Monument Works and Scheele's Antiques until they retired in the 1960s. Early on in Rosa May's life the family moved to their new home on Crown Avenue in La Cañada where she lived for the remainder of her childhood.

Suddenly, La Cañada Flintridge is au courant . This week, the USDA kicked off National Farmers Market Week with an updated version of their National Farmers Market Directory. The directory is published online at www.farmersmarkets.usda.gov . Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said that “8,144 farmers markets are now listed in USDA's National Farmers Market Directory, up from about 5,000 in 2008.” California ranks number one, with 759 registered farmers markets in the USDA directory.

Torres Memorial tees off June 22 Golfers are wanted to join in the fun at the Fifth Annual 2nd Lt. Pumpkin Alley ideal for area youngsters Sharon Rae Deacon, Ph.D., is once again lining her driveway at 1723 Earlmont Ave., La Cañada Flintridge, with 100 jack-o-lanterns for Halloween. The pumpkins will be on display from 6 to 9 p.m. Halloween (Friday, Oct. 31). There will be free treats for all children who visit the home. This is the 16th year for Pumpkin Alley. Sunland Produce has helped provide pumpkins for the past five years. Dr. Deacon’s friends and family will carve the pumpkins at her home.

One Colorado presents a four-week film festival of eight Marilyn Monroe classics projected outdoors in the One Colorado Courtyard in the heart of Old Pasadena every Friday and Saturday night in July starting July 9 at 8:30 p.m.  All movie screenings are free and open to the public.  Seating is provided. All films are digital and are projected onto a 30-foot screen on the two-story Crate & Barrel building. July 9 "Niagara" | 1953, Not Rated, 87 minutes, Starring Marilyn Monroe, Joseph Cotten An enjoyable thriller in the Hitchcock mode, this film delivers noir aesthetic, splashy locations and haunting 1950s psychology.
