Eunice Buan, who grew up in La Canada and is the daughter of La Canada residents Eryl and V. Thelma Buan, will tie the knot with Moreno Valley-born Sheldon Butler on Saturday, July 21. Eunice graduated from La Cañada High School in 1997, from UC Davis with a psychology degree in 2001, and from Samuel Merritt College with a master's degree in nursing in 2006. While working for her master's degree, she also earned her nursing license in 2005. She now works at the UC Davis Hospital system as a pediatric ICU nurse in Sacramento, California.

The La Cañada varsity golf team defeated host Rosemead Don Bosco Tech, 185-209, on March 7 in a nonleague match at Whittier Narrows Mountain Course. The Spartans improved to 4-0 while the Tigers fell to 2-1. The junior varsity team also won, 201-219. La Cañada will host Beverly Hills today (Thursday) at 2:30 p.m. in a nonleague contest at the La Cañada Country Club and will travel to Pasadena Brookside Golf Course for a 2:45 p.m. nonleague match against La Salle next Tuesday.

The Spartan boys' swimming team swept last week's Marrow Invitational meet in Beverly Hills with seven first place finishes. Junior super swimmer Julian Lawrence placed first in the 500 yard freestyle. Senior Christian Lawrence won the 200 yard IM and senior Devin Borisoff placed first in the 50 free. The Spartan boys' three relay teams dominated all relay events. Senior Caleb Greig joined Borishoff and both Lawrences to win the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Chris Myers and junior Peter Chi competed with J. and C. Lawrence in the 400 yard free relay, also taking first.

LCHS grad in all-star game Chris Tosello, a member of the 2008 graduate class of La Cañada High, has been selected to represent La Cañada High School, his team, family and community in the 2008 Hall of Fame All Star Football game. The game will be held on Friday June 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Bassett High School located at 755 Ardilla, La Puente. The West coaching staff is from South El Monte High School lead by Head Football Coach, Erick A. Escamilla. Chris has been playing football since freshman year and was awarded the MVP for the 2007-08 variety season.

Tied 6-6 going into the fourth quarter of its Rio Hondo League match against visiting Monrovia last Thursday, the La Cañada girls' varsity water polo team exploded for six unanswered goals to take the contest, 12-6. The Spartans, who improved to 14-10 overall and to 4-1 in league, traveled to San Marino on Tuesday and hosted Temple City yesterday (Wednesday) in league tussles, but no results were available at press time. The Spartans will host Burbank in a nonleague match next Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. and will visit South Pasadena next Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. league match.

The La Cañada varsity golf team has just concluded an undefeated Rio Hondo League season. The Spartans, which won the league with an 8-0 record and finished 15-4-1 overall, tied for seventh place with a 391 total in the CIF Southern Section Western Division Team Championship. The junior varsity team also had an excellent season, going 11-1. Individually, junior Abe Lee was named the league's co-most valuable player while senior David Lipsky, Kevin McKenzie and Joey Gutin, junior Ron Tjiptokesuma and freshman Brian Veeh also received All-League honors.

La Cañada High was well represented in 2005-2006 Rio Hondo League All-League selections in girls' basketball, soccer and water polo. In basketball, junior Emily Ballard was named Co-Most Valuable Player along with Monrovia's Shannon Gholar. A First Team pick was junior Mary Kate Hurlbutt. Chosen for the Second Team were seniors Emmilee Ringelberg, Caitlin Rohan and Jessica Lew. Honorable Mentions went to seniors Monica An and Raeanne Butts. In soccer, senior Michelle Drugan was named Defensive Player of the Year.

After a brief illness, Richard Schroeder, 75, died in his home on March 4 from acute leukemia. Born May 25, 1931, Dick was a native of Michigan; a graduate of Grosse Pointe High, Wayne State University and Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Illinois. A celebration of his life was held on March 10 at La Crescenta First Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and as an active layman since moving to La Cañada in 1969. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eunice Schroeder of La Cañada, son Richard Schroeder and grandson Ethan of Sacramento; daughter Debbie Botts and husband Rocky, grandchildren Casey, Emily, Jake of Corte Madera; daughter Chris Walters and husband Carey, grandchildren Alex and Sam of Ventura; brother Dave Schroeder and wife Susan of Fort Meyers, Fla.; brother Don Schroeder of Santa Rosa; and brother Denny Schroeder, also of Santa Rosa.

'Floaters' turn out for final party of year The LCF Tournament of Roses Association's annual Happy Hour "Under the Bridge" Sunday night was festive as usual, with more than 65 enthusiastic supporters viewing the float before its "flowering" during Deco Week. While the evening was crisp, the appetizers were hearty and Christmas cheer kept the crowd warm as they sipped and munched, chatted about their holidays, shopped at Floatique and speculated about the weather for the much-anticipated Rose Parade.
