Letters to the Editor Government must protect, respect all The idea that a ballot initiative could deny to a minority a fundamental right is simply baffling. California, you have seriously disappointed me once again. I thought that there was no chance that Prop 8 would pass in the first place. I guess you can call me naïve that I thought California was populated by people who cared about the civil rights of others. My mistake. The California Supreme Court had an amazing opportunity.

The health care reform measure passed by the House and signed into law by President Obama this week is being challenged by religious rights groups who claim that “the law treats religions unequally and forces adherents to be part of a healthcare system that violates their religious beliefs on abortion.” One lawsuit has been filed that claims “that forcing individuals to participate in a healthcare system that supports abortions violates their First Amendment right to freely follow their sincerely held religious beliefs.
