James K. Knowles, emeritus William R. Kenan professor and professor of applied mechanics at Caltech, died Nov. 1. He was born April 14, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Allyan Emma Gray and Newton Talbot Knowles. He was noted for exceptional teaching and research in continuum and structural mechanics and applied mathematics at MIT, where he received his bachelor and doctorate degrees, and at Caltech, where he was on the faculty from 1958 to 1996 and named honorary alumnus. He also was known for his leadership and commitment to excellence in science, students and the greater campus community.

Ten Years Ago More than 200 bottles of perfume were stolen from the Plaza de La Cañada Payless Drug Store. An employee of the store told investigating sheriff’s deputies that the individually-boxed fragrances with a total retail value of $10,091, were discovered missing from their locked cabinet at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday in late November 1997. Twenty Years Ago The inaugural Crescenta-Cañada YMCA Football Golf Classic held at Oakmont Country Club, raised $8,500, which was earmarked for program development.

Edison International, provider of thousands of scholarships to California's top students over the past 45 years, has established new guidelines for its scholarship program and is placing a renewed emphasis on public high school students with a high potential for academic success. "In the past, our scholarship program benefited only the highest-achieving students and was completely merit-based," said Michael U. Alvarez, vice president of strategic planning for Edison International.

Dr. William Hayward Pickering, a central figure in the U.S. space race and former director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1954 to 1976, has died. Pickering - known affectionately as "Mr. JPL" and an original "Rocket Man," and one of few public figures to appear twice on the cover of Time magazine - passed away Monday of pneumonia at his home in La Cañada Flintridge. He was 93. "Dr. Pickering was one of the titans of our nation's space program," said Dr. Charles Elachi, the current director of JPL. "It was his leadership that took America into space and opened up the moon and planets to the world."
