Dia duit ! In case you are wondering, that is Irish for, ?Hello.? I?m back after an amazing two-week journey to Ireland. The music of this country heard in its many forms, from the roar of the sea, the bleat of newborn lambs running after their mothers in a green meadow to the sound of a fiddle and tin whistle in a cozy pub will always be beautiful sound memories that will bring me back again and again to the rugged beauty I found there....

The Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation Endowment Fund has recently contributed a check for $103,690 from its investment earnings to the LCFEF Annual Fund. "This gift illustrates the ongoing support the Endowment Fund can provide the LCF Educational Foundation," said LCFEF President Renee La Bran. "It will give our La Cañada school district important flexibility for smaller class sizes, technology needs, library support and more," she said. The Endowment Fund contributes 5% of its net assets each year to the Annual Fund, subject to certain restrictions.

Jim Stoker's April 1 letter to the editor regarding the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation was a hodgepodge of baseless allegations and flat out untruths that illustrate the old maxim, “No good deed goes unpunished.” Stoker is wrong when he alleges our school district cannot ask community members to donate to the foundation. The law absolutely permits this. At the risk of restating the obvious, donations to the LCFEF are entirely voluntary. That's while we call them “donations.” Stoker alleges the LCFEF is “too involved in the politics of the district.” Nonsense.

Passion. I felt it when I met my husband. I felt it when I had my kids. I felt it the first time I sang a song on a stage. Now, I am feeling passion for a new venture. I am beginning my first year as the president of the Glendale Community Foundation -- a charitable endowment just for our community that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. When I joined the Board of Trustees two years ago, I knew of the Community Foundation as a stalwart of our community. It has made more than $3 million in grants to more than 300 agencies, most of which are right here in the Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Montrose and Verdugo City area.

Crestview had its last Walk-a-Thon with Head of School Marge Hanna on Sunday, Oct 15. Hanna is retiring this year, and the turnout was fantastic. Teachers, staff, students, alumni and parents walked laps around the St. Francis High School track to earn money for the Marge Hanna Endowment Fund for Technology. Walkers enjoyed music and games by a deejay, lemons with peppermint sticks, homemade snacks and food from the In-N-Out Burger truck. Prizes were given for the most laps walked (the gumball machine was a big draw)

The confession "I Can't Draw a Straight Line" is progressively becoming ancient history, according to educator and fine artist Larry Gluck , founder of Mission: Renaissance Fine Art Studios , the world's largest fine art program. His art studios in La Cañada and Glendale teach children and adults the lost principles of fine art while developing talent in those previously deemed "untalented." Gluck's mission continues to succeed in spite of political views who consider art education a frill as witnessed by the decline in federal funding at the National Endowment for the Arts, where appropriations have been declining steadily from 176 million in 1992 to 124 million in 2006.
