The La Canada High boys' varsity water polo team reached the finals of the Villa Park Tournament last weekend, but was denied the championship by Righetti, who won the title, 8-7. The Spartans had defeated El Toro, 14-3, in the 32-team tournament semifinals on Saturday and has dropped La Jolla Bishops 10-8 in the quarterfinals on Friday. The 9-4 Spartans, who are ranked sixth in the state's top 10 poll, played El Toro. La Cañada next traveled to Servite on Tuesday to open Rio Hondo League play, but no results were available at press time.

A tough day for La Cañada lacrosse fans on Tuesday as the Spartans fell to Newport Harbor, 12-6. The Spartans (5-7) entered the half down 7-5 and came out striking first, to narrow the lead to 7-6, but Newport took over and scored five unanswered. ?Our game going through the middle was good,? said Spartans Head Coach Alison Dodson, ?I think their defense was swarming.? Dodson went on to say that Newport was scheduled this year so her girls could face stiffer competition and be more prepared for challenges ahead.

The 2005 season for the La Cañada boys' varsity water polo team began and ended with games against arch rival, the Montebello Oilers. What happened in between connected the two contests together as the Spartans opened the season with a 10-4 win over the Oilers and then beat them in their last game, 14-11, at Long Beach's Belmont Plaza Pool on Nov. 21 to win the CIF Southern Section Division III Championship. The title was La Cañada's first since 1999 and fourth under coach Larry Naeve.

The La Cañada water polo teams had various degrees of success in tournaments played last weekend. The teams played at Mira Costa on Tuesday with no results available at press time. The varsity will participate in the Villa Park Tournament today (Thursday) through Saturday, while the junior varsity and novice teams will play at Burbank next Monday, Rio Hondo League play begins on Tuesday at San Marino and continues with league matches against Monrovia on Thursday. Playing in the South Coast Tournament last Saturday, the varsity team was edged by Laguna Beach, 9-8 and got by Corona del Mar, 9-7. The Spartans' overall record is now 8-6. Corona del Mar led 4-1 after the first quarter, but La Cañada held the team scoreless in the second quarter and tied the match, 4-4, at the half.

Remaining undefeated in Rio Hondo League play, the La Cañada boys' varsity water polo team defeated host Monrovia, 15-6 last Thursday. Improving to 6-0 in league, the Spartans traveled to El Toro on Tuesday for a nonleague game match and hosted South Pasadena yesterday (Thursday) in a league contest, but no results were available at press time. The Spartans will visit San Marino today (Thursday) in a 3:30 p.m. league matchup and will take the bus to Villa Park next Friday for a 4 p.m. nonleague match to finish out the regular season.

Long Beach Wilson defeated the La Cañada High varsity water polo team, 13-9, in the South Coast Tournament Championship semifinals last weekend. Doug McNeese led the Spartans wit three goals. Jordan Thompson and Devon Borisoff followed with two goals each and adding one goal apiece were Gamal Rady and Max Scott. In an earlier tournament game, La Cañada topped El Toro, 10-8. Thompson had four goals and Rady and McNeese contributed three each for the Spartans. La Cañada won its first three games in the tournament.

Participating in the Menlo Tournament last weekend in San Francisco, the La Cañada varsity water polo team finished 2-2 to wind up in sixth place in the event. The Spartans defeated Burlingame, 8-2, lost to Atherton Sacred Heart, 6-5, squashed Soqeul, 17-8, and fell to Mountain View St. Francis, 14-10. La Cañada (3-2) played El Toro there on Tuesday, but no results were available at press time. The Spartans will play Long Beach Millikan there today (Thursday). The varsity will also compete in the Newport Harbor Tournament today through Saturday.

La Cañada boys? water polo is on a hot streak as they beat Monrovia 17-1 on Monday, their fourth straight victory in Rio Hondo league play. La Cañada (6-17, 4-0 in league) has beaten the other three teams of the Rio Hondo, including a 11-10 overtime win against South Pasadena. The Spartans scored nine unanswered goals in the second half. ?This was one of the better games they?ve played [this season],? said Spartans Head Coach German Lopez. ?They were being aggressive, they were pushing the [counter-attack]

BOYS' WATER POLO La Cañada in South Coast Tournament : The Spartans had a tough draw early on in tournament play Thursday. La Cañada won convincingly over Villa Park in the first round, 18-7, but was defeated handily by Mater Dei, the No. 1 team in CIF Southern Section Division I, 25-7, at Servite High. Symeon Stefan led La Cañada with a team-high five goals against Villa Park, while Chase Borisoff added four more scores in a standout performance. The Spartans were no match for the Monarchs, who have won CIF Division titles the past four years and have a CIF Southern Section winning streak more than 50 games long according to OCVarsity.com.
