For almost a year La Cañada High School junior Kelly Streeter has had a constant companion in Hibiscus, a gentle dog with big brown eyes. Like most pets, Hibiscus has become a part of the family and a loyal friend. In just a few months Streeter will have to hand over the leash and walk away from the dog she has helped raise. "It will be hard, but I [went in] knowing I would not be able to keep her," Streeter said. Streeter volunteered to raise Hibiscus for the Guide Dog for the Blind organization headquartered in San Rafael.

Scouts need collection assistance Ali Yoon and Aubri Thompson from Cadette Girl Scout Troop 592 need help on their Girl Scout Silver Award Project. They are collecting bottles and cans to recycle in order to donate the profits through Feed the Children to victims of the Myanmar cyclone. Collect bottles and cans in trash bags and drop them off at the boxes at Fire Station 82 no later than Dec. 20. Your support is appreciated. For more information, call Yoon at (818)

Mike Gooch , the youngest son of Rita Gooch and Frank Gooch, was born on Aug. 14, 1990. A sophomore at La Cañada High School, Gooch previously attended La Canada Elementary School. He joins over 90 other Boy Scouts from Troop 398 who have attained the rank of Eagle Scout since 1975. For his Eagle Project, Gooch planned and supervised the planting and refurbishing of vegetation and landscaping at La Cañada Elementary School. Of the 31 merit badges Gooch earned, his favorites were shotgun shooting and wilderness survival.

Three Scouts in Boy Scouts of America JPL Troop 509 were honored with the highest rank in Scouting, the Eagle Scout Award, this winter. Alon Atkins , Niels Hauksson and Matthew Upton are residents of La Cañada and students at La Cañada High School. La Cañada High Schools senior Atkins joined Palm Crest Elementary Cub Scout Pack 515 in kindergarten. In Cub Scouts, he earned many pins, including the Arrow of Light Award and participated in many Cub Scout events.

Jeff Foster from St. George's Troop 502 has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. He will be having an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony at St. George's Episcopal Church in April. Foster has also been awarded the highly esteemed Order of the Arrow award during his time as a Boy Scout. For his Eagle Scout service project, Foster provided leadership in the construction of a storage shed for La Cañada Elementary Cub Scout Pack 512 at the Lutheran Church in the Foothills where the Cub Scouts meet for their annual Rain Gutter Regatta and Pinewood Derby races.

Charles Patrick Crandon of La Cañada received his Eagle Scout Award on Jan. 20 during ceremonies at von Karman auditorium at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Born in October 1988, Crandon grew up in La Cañada. After youth programs with Cub Scouts and Y Guides, he joined Troop 509 at JPL in 1999. He has enjoyed many activities while part of the troop. In particular, he enjoyed Philmont where, despite assurance that it almost never rains, rain and hail were part of every day. He also enjoyed climbing Mount Whitney with a stalwart group of scouts and leaders.

Jeffrey W. Pih of Boy Scout Troop 509 became an Eagle Scout during a Court of Honor Ceremony held June 9 in von Karman Auditorium at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Jeffrey was born on June 18, 1988 at Verdugo Hills Hospital. He entered Cub Scouts in first grade with Pack 515 from Palm Crest Elementary. Soon after, he earned his Arrow of Light and joined Boy Scout Troop 509, where he immediately felt comfortable and focused. As a Boy Scout, Jeffrey served the troop as a Patrol Leader, Bugler, Board of Review Leader, and Instructor.
