Elizabeth Peach Aufhammer Elizabeth Peach Aufhammer passed away on July 31, 2008 due to complications from a serious heart attack a few weeks previously. Elizabeth (also affectionately called Peaches) was born in Ipoh, Malaysia on Aug. 26, 1920 to missionary parents Nora and Preston Peach from Mitchellville, Md. She returned to her parents’ hometown in the United States at the age of 8 to live with her beloved Aunt Nanny, brothers and cousins. While at Duke University, Elizabeth was active in the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and was selected as a “White Duchy” — a small group of women on campus recognized for their character and overall campus involvement.

Dean?s List with distinction for local DeDe Mann , a 2009 graduate of La Cañada High School, has been awarded the Dean?s List with Distinction honor (GPA of 3.925 and above) for the Fall 2009 semester at Duke University in Durham, N.C. This honor places Mann in the top 7% of the freshman class in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and in the top 10% of all undergraduate students. Mann is a member of the marching band, pep band, Chi Omega sorority, Alpha Phi Omega co-ed community service fraternity and Women?

Dr. Elliot Engel returns for his 13th season with the San Marino Celebrity Series on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. Dr. Engel will present "The Immortal King Arthur" at the Chapel of Lake Avenue Church, 393 N. Lake Avenue, Pasadena. Known for his humor and anecdotes, this former English professor will delight all as he brings to life the era of Camelot. Dr. Engel now resides in Raleigh, North Carolina where he has taught courses at Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State.

The entire community is invited to hear John W. (Jack) Welch speak on New Year's Day, Sunday, Jan. 1, at 6 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1830 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge. Welch will discuss the parable of the Good Samaritan. The savior explained to his disciples that there are different levels of understanding of his parables depending on their degree of spirituality. The hidden meaning of the sower and of the wheat and the tares, but what about the Good Samaritan?

Don Sheppard's club soccer team, the Flyers AUSC Cougars, a boys under 12 team, won the Coast League Spring Cup Championship, in the "A" Flight. The score was 1-1 in regulation play but the Cougars prevailed in the penalty kick shootout. The Cougars' goalkeeper, Jose Cano, came up with two big saves during the shootout, but when Lyudvig Berberyan's kick hit the back of the net with the match-winning penalty kick, pandemonium erupted on the field. The Cougars joyfully celebrated the win on their home field, the new LCHS field, knowing they had just beaten one of the very best teams in Southern California, the South Bay Force.

Eight high school seniors from La Cañada Flintridge were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship last week. The La Cañada Thursday Club lauded Matt Singelyn , Colleen Degnan , Kara Lankey , Sophia Eckerle , Liza Upton , Katharine Henry , Danielle Smith and Colby Koklas for exceptional work. Singelyn attends St. Francis High School and is the former manager of the school's football team. He plans to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, majoring in sports management.

Members of the Don José Verdugo Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, honored five local students at its annual Good Awards ceremony held recently at Beckham Grill in Pasadena. The DAR Good Citizen Award is presented to students who are deemed outstanding for the work they do for home, school, community and country. They are selected by school faculty committees based on qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. This year five young women, all seniors, representing five local high schools were selected for this award.

What we like to think of as “the most wonderful time of the year” is, for some, anything but wonderful. Blood sugar levels can spike from consuming goodies and treats that seem to be everywhere. The ensuing insulin spike often includes irritability, lethargy and foggy-headedness. Shopping, rushing and standing in line can be stressful. Rising frustration and feeling stuck in line can foster a low-grade anxiety that can bring on cravings. Warding off the holiday blues takes a little food planning - but a little planning goes a long way. Sure, we all know what we shouldn't eat; but when sweets are all around us, finding a healthy snack feels like swimming upstream.

The La Cañada Thursday Club has awarded scholarships to 10 local high school students. Scholarships were awarded based on the students’ academic achievement as well as service to their community. Ruth Barber is a member of the National Honor Society, the California Scholastic Federation, is a National Merit Finalist, the president/section leader of the LCHS Marching Band and Alto section leader/treasurer of the LCHS Chamber Singers. She is a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient and was a Les Fleurettes debutante.
