If you're a fan of America's show-style marching bands and want to be entertained by the best, then plan on attending the Fine Arts Festival featuring the St. Francis Drumline at the Degheri Performing Arts Center. The Center is located at St. Francis High School, 200 Foothill Blvd, La Cañada Flintridge. Performances are May 7 and 8, starting at 7:30 p.m. Under the direction of Tye Gaddis, the St. Francis Drumline is made up of 20 students from diverse backgrounds. These talented young men, armed with their musical instruments, will command your attention with their spectacular display of choreography and musicianship.

The La Cañada High School drumline set a program best on Saturday, placing second in the Southern California Percussion Alliance finals at Cal State University, San Bernardino. The Spartans posted a score of 90.56 for second place. Canyon High School came in first with a score of 92.24. La Cañada also qualified for the upcoming Winter Guard International Championships. “This is the highest success rate we’ve had so far,” said Bradley Rancourt, instructor of La Cañada’s drumline.

The La Cañada High School Winter Drumline recently competed in an international competition in Dayton, Ohio after participating in local competitions across Southern California. The group's six-minute show, "Materialism," combined musical pieces with a visual performance. The group earned a score of 90.125 in a preliminary performance, moving into the semi-finals. The Winter Drumline includes Eugene Kim, Andy Kim, Blake Lotter, Garret Culver, Spencer Wells, Kerry Moore, Noah Kim, Chris Derhartounian, Owen Gong, Manny Ramirez, Gavin Hyunh, Cory Tripathy, SoYoung Kwon, Ellie Kim, David Deans, Sean Haupt, Matthew Miller, Peter Choi, Bennett Lugosi and Arineh Matosian.

Members of the St. Francis High School Drumline passed up their usual secret Santa gift exchange this year, deciding instead to spread holiday cheer by collecting and donating toys to the children at City of Hope's pediatric ward. Working with the Desi Geestman Foundation, drumline members collected toys that will go directly to children being treated for cancer.

Teen volunteers sought for Descanso Students ages 14 and older are invited to volunteer at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge. St. Bede Catholic Church will be celebrating its 55th birthday on Sunday, Oct. 1, with a Round-Up and BBQ Bonanza from 4 to 8 p.m. The annual event will include plenty of rides, games, food, and entertainment for the entire family. An old-fashioned cake walk, souvenir photos, and pony rides are just a few of the attractions to expect. There will also be a "Kids Corral" with game booths and prizes and rides for kids of all ages including a Giant Slide and Obstacle Course. There is no admission charge for the Round-Up, but wristbands good for an unlimited number of rides are available.

St. Francis High School recently celebrated its 10th Annual Festival of the Arts, a week-long event that featured the SFHS Drumline's "Sound & Light" presentation, a fine arts exhibit and Men's Chorus concert. The week concluded with the 10th Annual Mass Media Film Festival and Drama Awards presentations. The mass media film festival included teams of students producing a music video, documentary, short feature and final feature, which had to be an original story and at least 20 minutes in length.

St. Francis High School celebrated their 2009 Homecoming Oct. 30 with a victorious football game and the presentation of their Homecoming Court. Leading the procession to Friedman Field was the St. Francis Drumline. Xiomara Garza, a senior at Alverno High School, was crowned Homecoming Queen during the half-time ceremonies of the St. Francis vs. St. Paul game. Xiomara’s court members included seniors Meghan Fitzpatrick, Kira Ramani and Nicole Urbelis from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy; and Gabby Bruno and Megan Hofilena from Alverno High School.
