Hibners feted for their service to local riding club It was a standing ovation for Don and Scarlett Hibner Friday night at the Flintridge Riding Club’s annual memorial weekend dressage extravaganza. The members of the renown riding club chose to honor the Hibners for their many years of dedicated service. Members of the club since 1970, they have served in numerous capacities. Don, an anti-trust and labor relations attorney with Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, has brought his expertise to the Board of Directors, serving several three year stints, including several terms as president of the club.

The Flintridge Riding Club, a riding facility located in La Cañada Flintridge, has announced the accomplishments of several of its young riders who received championship status in their divisions in the past year. Olivia Warner, riding Lady Braveheart, scored as 2004 high-point winner of the Pacific Coast Horse Show Association's (PCHA) Champion Pony Jumpers, Southern and Northern California regions. Warner was included as one of the honorees in the January PCHA awards banquet.

La Cañada residents will have the opportunity to watch some of the most talented horses and riders on the East Coast test their mettle this weekend at the Flintridge Horse Trials which take place at Flintridge Riding Club. Local competitors include Mary Spencer-Smith, Cris Warner and Stacey Carr of La Cañada and Keri Burton and Barbara Wachsman of Pasadena. Horses and riders from all over the area will compete for top honors in the equestrian sport known as eventing. An Olympic sport since 1912, eventing is best described as an equestrian triathlon, with three phases that test the competitors' skills.

The Interscholastic Equestrian League (IEL) recently held its 2005 -- 2006 season awards ceremonies at the Sportsman's Lodge in North Hollywood, where several La Cañada High student riders were honored. Nearly 350 people attended the year-end ceremonies which included a banquet, the awarding of $12,000 in scholarships, and recognition for the top schools and riders in this year's competitions. Sixty-five schools represented by more than 425 riders competed in this year's horse shows.

La Cañada High School seniors Barb Solish and Patrick Strapazon collected, cleaned and delivered riding clothes and horse tack to the Compton Jr. Posse as part of their LCHS Institute for the Twenty-first Century yearly project. Compton Jr. Posse is a nonprofit after-school program which pairs inner-city children with horses. Both students are members of Flintridge Riding Club. Through the generosity of FRC members and local horse owners, they collected over 200 items including show clothes, boots, horse bridles, blankets and a 50-pound sack of carrots.

The La Cañada High equestrian team, competing in the Interscholastic Equestrian League, won Show 4 on April 15. The Spartans defeated runner up Thousand Oaks La Reina by more than 60 points. La Cañada had the High Point Team in the freshman, junior varsity and varsity divisions. Meghan Fitzpatrick was both the freshman Hunter Champion and the freshman High Point Rider Reserve Champion. Stephanie Green captured both the junior varsity High Point Rider and the junior varsity Hunter Champion.

Ten Years Ago After more than a year of unfruitful teacher contract negotiations, the La Cañada Unified School District’s bargaining unit declared an impasse and sought the help of a mediator.   Twenty Years Ago With drought-like conditions in the Southland, Ron Palmer, the general manager of Foothill Municipal Water District, appeared before the La Cañada Flintridge City Council to ask La Cañada residents to voluntarily reduce their water consumption by 10%.   Thirty Years Ago Local equestrian Anne Kursinski was among the participants at the Olympic Dressage Team Western Selection Trials held at Flintridge Riding Club in spring 1980.

Three hundred seventy-six riders, representing 51 schools, competed in the 2004 - 2005 Interscholastic Equestrian League's (IEL) 21st season, which came to a close on May 20 at the league's annual awards banquet. More than 325 riders attended the awards ceremony, including the 23-member La Canada High School Team which received several prestigious awards. Out of 51 competing schools, LCHS finished in second place and were awarded Reserve Champion. As in past years, the LCHS equestrian team had riders competing in all four of the IEL's competition divisions: novice, freshman, junior varsity, and varsity, as well as the IEL's three equestrian disciplines: hunters, jumpers, and dressage.

It was all fun and games at the Rose Bowl Riders 'Horses in the Arroyo Day.' To celebrate horses' long presence in the arroyo, Rose Bowl Riders put on a Play Day & BBQ in Lower Hahamongna Watershed Park (formerly Oak Grove Park) on Saturday, June 24. The event was open to the public and free to attend. RBR president and La Cañada resident Emily Stork estimated that about 100 people turned out to take part in the festivities throughout the day, which began at noon and included classes such as the Paired Ribbon Ride, Egg in Spoon Ride, Cloverleaf Barrels, and Banana Relay.
