Dean?s List with distinction for local DeDe Mann , a 2009 graduate of La Cañada High School, has been awarded the Dean?s List with Distinction honor (GPA of 3.925 and above) for the Fall 2009 semester at Duke University in Durham, N.C. This honor places Mann in the top 7% of the freshman class in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and in the top 10% of all undergraduate students. Mann is a member of the marching band, pep band, Chi Omega sorority, Alpha Phi Omega co-ed community service fraternity and Women?

Thirteen seniors this year at La Cañada High School have been announced as National Merit Scholar semifinalists. Out of the more than 1.4 million high school students who took the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) last October, approximately 16,000 students across the nation were notified this past September of the semifinalist distinction. They were chosen based upon their Selection Index scores, or combined scores from the critical reading, mathematics and writing skills portions of the test.

The doors of four superbly decorated La Cañada Flintridge homes will be open to the public tomorrow (May 4) as part of the 21st Annual Spring Home Tour. This event, which is the primary fundraiser for the La Cañada High School grades 7 and 8, draws crowds each year to view interesting décor and shop the varied boutiques that display merchandise at each of the homes. In addition to the tour, shoppers can enjoy a delicious luncheon catered by Green Street Restaurant. Tickets for the Home Tour and the luncheon are available at the Tour's Descanso Gardens headquarters, which will be open during both sessions of the tour, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Headquarters will be closing at approximately 7 p.m. Same-day tickets for the tour are $35 each, and luncheon tickets may be purchased for $15. In addition, individuals who pre-ordered tickets online but did not receive them in the mail should check in at Descanso Gardens.

Standing over the goal she once protected, Kristine Cato reflected on her year and the awards that have been heaped on her since the season ended. “It’s really satisfying,” said the mild-mannered goalkeeper. A couple of months have passed since the CIF-SS playoffs and Cato has been receiving kudos and awards left and right. All-LA. Rio Hondo MVP. And now All-Area Player of the Year, as decided by the La Cañada Valley Sun, Burbank Leader and Glendale News-Press.

Mayfield Senior School is proud to announce the achievements of some of its top students. Amanda Yamasaki has received the designation of National Merit Semi-Finalist from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation based on her scores on the 2005 PSAT/NMSQT exam. Twenty-six students at Mayfield Senior School earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams. Four graduates in the Class of 2006 qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

La Cañada's Andrew Kirwan was among 656 undergraduates named to Denison University's fall dean's list by University Provost Keith Boone. Students who achieve dean's list status have maintained a grade-point average of 3.5 or better (out of 4.0) for the semester. Kirwan is thr son of Beverly Thelander of La Cañada. Kirwan, a 2005 graduate of La Cañada High School, is a sophomore philosophy major at Denison. Only one out of every four students achieved dean's list distinction this past fall semester, Anderson noted in congratulating each scholar.
