The La Cañada Newcomers Club La Cañada Newcomers Club , open to new area residents as well as longtime La Cañadans who would like to meet new neighbors and make new friends, will host a Fall Mixer potluck dinner party at the home of Vacit and Sheila Arat on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. Guests bring a food item and beverage to share. A June wedding date has been set by Sarah Elizabeth Garner and Daniel Elbert Niemann, whose engagement was announced at a dinner party. Sarah is the daughter of the Rev. Richard Garner and Diane Garner of Moorpark. She is the granddaughter of Amy Wada and the late George Wada; and the late Mr. and Mrs. Jack Garner. Daniel is the son of Fred and Rosalie Niemann of Lasheart Drive in La Cañada. His grandparents are Elbert Harris of Ashland, Ore.; the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur F. Niemann and the late Mrs. Jeanette Vance Harris Puntney.

Richard Garner and Diane Garner of Moorpark. She is the granddaughter of Amy Wada and the late George Wada; and the late Mr. and Mrs. Jack Garner. Daniel is the son of Fred and Rosalie Niemann of Lasheart Drive in La Cañada. His grandparents are Elbert Harris of Ashland, Ore.; the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur F. One month after his wedding to Huntington Hospital?s director of development Lynn De Groot, La Cañada City Councilman Don Voss still says his bride is ?the most magnificent person I know.? During a council meeting earlier this month, La Cañada Flintridge Mayor Steve Del Guercio proclaimed the couple?s Nov. 14 wedding date as officially Mr. and Mrs. Voss Day. ?That was really sweet and we?re honored,? Voss said, in an interview with the Valley Sun this week. The couple met three years ago, at a mutual friend?

Scott and Mary Tracy recently hosted a family dinner party at their home in La Cañada Flintridge to announce the engagement of their daughter, Lindsay Robin Tracy, to Christopher Daniel Hall, son of Danny and Ginger Hall of Sunnyvale. The couple met in 2004 as youth counselors during a missions trip to Germany. The bride-to-be is a 1999 graduate of La Cañada High School where she was senior class president. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in English and a teacher's credential from Yale University.

Jane Napier Neely Chit Chat From Here and There Sophistication was the style of last Saturday evening's "Night Bloomin' Jazz" black-tie benefit sponsored by S.E.E.D.S. (Supporting Education and Excellence at Descanso.) More than $150,000 was raised to support the botanic garden and its role as a community resource for learning and discovery of nature. Descanso Gardens was a magical gathering place for more than 400 guests at the 6th annual event, which has become one of the most elegant fund-raising parties held in La Cañada Flintridge each year.

If you were on vacation on Aug. 25, 2005, you might have missed this column. I'm reprinting it today because many readers found it fascinating. When my daughters were small, I told them that girls were required to wear skirts to school in my day. They were flabbergasted. Not long ago, they both mentioned my dress code stories, claiming that they were struck with horror and awe, when they first heard them. They say they cannot imagine how women grew up to be strong and self-confident with no sports teams for girls, playing dodge ball in skirts at recess.
